The nets were brought up in the context of a dart build that is already taking Gunner and Sharpshooter. So really, all we're talking about is one more feat (Elven Accuracy, which itself provides +1 Dex) to fully exploit the advantage that Restrained will provide. But even without EA, the Net is already fully viable using the exact same feats that the Sharpshooter dart user is already using.
There is no down side to using a net with darts, other than to the extent that it stops you from wielding a Shield. -2 AC is the cost of the Net, not the feats.
Alright, so if you’re already taking the two most prerequisite feats, then nets become viable. And adding elven accuracy isn’t a bad step. Which subclass? I’m assuming Champion for the double fighting styles (Thrown & Archery) and the Crit fishing. In for a cp, in for 5gp as it were. (I hope someone gets that.) Or is it an Eldritch Knight for Weapon Bond? Or is this another hexblade dip situation?
Nope I go Battlemaster for maneuvers, most important being Quick Toss so you can bonus action with the net and then go to town with your darts.
But there is no damage roll with a net, so the superiority die would be wasted as far as damage goes. Since nets do no damage, there would be no damage roll. But if you can just get an indestructible net that you can *bamph* to your hand as a bonus action…. Also, remember that the additional damage from sharpshooter only applies to “ranged weapons) so whatever you need the Handaxe for, it won’t blend as well with the Sharpshooter as the darts would. And assuming you are maining Dex, if you did want some options to switch it up for melee weapons once in a while, why not daggers instead?
If you can get your hands on Spear or Javelin of Backbiting, thrown melee weapon fighting can become a viable competitor against thrown dart fighting (Spear is actually much better, because PAM). 2d6+2+2+5+2 spear throws (avg. 18) aren't that different from a similarly-magical (1d4+2+5+2+10)*.85 (avg 18.275) dart throws on their own, and as a champion, those 5d6 spear crits will pull ahead of 3d4 dart crits a little bit. You can also take polearm master, to provide you a bonus action butt attack for 1d6+2+5+2 (avg. 13.5) that the darts don't get (they're busy throwing a net, apparently), and with Crusher that bonus action can be used to re-create distance for you with an enemy so that you don't need to take Gunner. Or probably better, consider Shield Master instead of or in addition to Crusher. A VHuman Champion could pull all of that together by 10, right about when such a Spear might be an appropriate reward.
Fighter 20 four attacks per Attack + 1 bonus butt attack
I don't usually like pinning a build on a specific magic item. But I just think it's interesting that the Spear of Backbiting is like really good for a thrown PAM champion, which isn't a build that seems like it would be able to keep up with Sharpshooter, but actually can!

I never said I wanted my net to do damage, that scenario has been debated to death on another thread lol. All I want to do is restrain with the net so I get advantage on my sharpshooter rolls with my darts. If I had to melee I would use a rapier because of the higher damage die but why would I ever want to melee when Gunner removes the disadvantage from my ranged attacks within 5 ft. Daggers are crap for my build because they do NOT qualify for Sharpshooter.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
