I have a paladin in my campaign that used his breathe weapon once at low level and hasn’t used it since. I like the change because we might see some more breathe weapon use. I’m waiting to see them implemented on the site so I can roll up a character with a smattering of the features.
Yeah, even against like, zombies, it wasn't that useful, i got more bang out of the cantrip i'd taken for my style. My dm had already added prof uses per rest because it wasn't that game breaking. I honestly use it more for flare/intimidation and starting the campfire in a pinch, than combat.
Just a thought on a possible minor tweak to the writing of the Breath Weapon for these dragonborn races, it currently can be used as part of the Attack action to replace an attack, but not with Multiattack, so any Dragonborn Druid that Wild Shapes into a form with Multiattack won't be able to use the Breath Weapon as part of that action. I might suggest changing that to let Dragonborn Druids have the same general boost that the martial classes with Extra Attack are getting here (not that they really need a boost, though). Thoughts on this?

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Kobolds...why? And why roaring? They're kobolds. At best they might meow loudly. I do kinda dig the whole variable draconic trait thing, kobolds have always been genetically unstable to a degree. That fits. But the roar thing is just odd. I'm not actually sure if this is a better idea than regular kobolds, even with sunlight sensitivity. Perhaps as a separate population/subspecies of the more typical critters, or as a rare mutation amongst more typical populations. The stat block does seem to fit an individual who's markedly, fundamentally different from other kobolds, which could make for interesting stories.
I understand this may have already been pointed out but I don't feel like reading through 8 pages. The roar is literally just the power-creep version of Grovel, Cower, and Beg. Same range and effect, bonus action instead of action, proficiency bonus instead of once a long rest. I feel it's just a mix between the inevitable power-creep and WOTC trying to move away from giving their humanoids perceived negative characteristics.
Ehhh, If the roar was just a replacement for Grovel, Cower and Beg that would be one thing, but when you take into account it's filling in for both that and Pack Tactics, it ends up becoming a bit of a nerf all around.
Anyone know when these will be added to D&D Beyond? It's usually " the next Monday" but that's not happened this time. Anyone heard anything?

you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of a magical energy in a 30-foot line that is 5 feet wide.
It would still be a huge damage boost to any martial class...
I hope they intended it that way that you can only use it once per round. Normally they would state “on your round you can replace one attack...” as it is right now, I could still use action surge for two breaths ;) so 10d8 plus my extra attacks. Still a huge damage buff and I could do that combo 3 times a day.
Edit: okay you can use it 2 times not 3 times. Action surge would be the limiting factor...
I still don't have a problem with this. They must use an action surge, 2 of their breath attacks and sacrifice 2 of their Great Weapon Master attacks.
Let me rephrase it... you would be dumb if you don’t play a dragon born fighter if you want max damage output with your fighter.
Thats like saying you would be dumb not to play an elven fighter to get elven accuracy to max your Crit rate. Its not dumb, its an ok combo but not the be all end all of DPR fighter builds
My husband interjected, that you will have higher average damage with 3 longsword attacks than 5d8. 1d8 + str which is probably +5 + 1 for magic weapon + and +2 for duelist as a base, so 3d8 + 24 vs 2d8 + 15 + 5d8 which you are probably not going to roll max on and have no chance to crit, so your average damage will be much higher just swinging your sword than an attack that half the planet is going to save vs for half damage. I am leaning to d6 damage for breath and prof uses, but it's not that useful regardless, even at d8, because who uses burning hands at 20th level?
But why would you compare 3 attacks vs 1 breath? It's 1d8+8 (your numbers) vs 5d8. 12.5 on average vs 22.5. A crit is more than negated by a miss. The breath can hit multiple targets. So the only time it's better to swing is when you are attacking a single target with a very low AC & a very good Dex save or resistance. There's really no reason to guess at this, it's basic math. Just run the actual numbers on a napkin (or AnyDice.com) and see for yourself.

Yeah it would be one breath and two longsword attacks, as I can replace one of my attacks and still have the rest of them 😅
But if everyone thinks it isn’t very strong, than I must be wrong. It just feels very strong as it is a race feature which gets stronger and is a AoE damage. The dragon born was always more for the martial classes but maybe we will soon see much more spellcaster? It would be nice 😊
I know that my dm will not allow these UA changes and that I would need to take a feat to get a similar result. But my feat will also include an concentrated fire breath which scales like a firebolt and is single target at a low distance (15 feet or so). So I can replace my breath with the concentrated breath. Need to wait for level 6 to do so 😅 one more level...

Do you think maybe we could table this discussion until we have a chance to actually play them? Until then all we have is gut feelings, mathematical projections, and tangentially related anecdotes, and I think we've done enough spinning our wheels based on those already.
I love the Breath weapon changes but now that they are "Magical" they will be subject to AntiMagic Field. So keep that in mind.
Breath Weapon. When you take the Attack action, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of a magical energy
Areas of Magic. The area of another spell or magical effect, such as fireball, can't extend into the sphere. If the sphere overlaps an area of magic, the part of the area that is covered by the sphere is suppressed. For example, the flames created by a wall of fire are suppressed within the sphere, creating a gap in the wall if the overlap is large enough.

Good catch!
"Normal" dragon's breath is one of those Non-magical AoE stuff that is rare in 5e....so this is kind of odd to change over to magical but there it is.

Some of us are playing them.
On Tuesday, had one of our players try out the Dragonborn (Silver) 6th level Paladin and the damage really didn't seem to be that different than normal over all. They used the breath weapon once on a group of Sahuagin hitting 3 and instead of dealing damage Incapacitated them. That was way more effective than the 3d8 they dealt against the Baron and one of his buddies later in the game.

No, and we're probably not going to until they actually do add it.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.

Wouldn't the gunslinger with the feats do more damage?
CBE does thanks to the BA handcrossbow attack.

Gunslinger is not an official subclass, so I don't count it, but even that does not beat CBE
