I'm just glad they're actually going to make it to the light of day. With the shift to focus on OneD&D, I was worried that this UA would never make it to official publication. But now that they've announced the new Giants based book, it seems like this will finally end up as official material.

With the way we have seen the "Not One DnD" evolve, does anyone still believe in backward compatibility? Because I really don't see it any more. At the moment, I'm not buying anything any more until we know exactly how the new edition will look like.
The “backwards compatibility” refers to the future stuff being compatible with the current adventures and monsters, not future character options being compatible with current character options.
What Player option that will be presented in BP:GotG won't be compatible with OneDnD?
Well, since 1D&D is a year-ish from release, and we don’t know what it will look like, it’s impossible to say. We have Wizard’s repeated assurances that it will be compatible, and I believe them that they want it to be compatible (others don’t, and that’s their prerogative). But exactly how compatible it ends up being isn’t something we’ll know until we have the new PHB in our hands.

I agree that we don't know what the final product will look like, but everything that we know of that is in the upcoming book is 100% compatible with what has been presented in the UA thus far.
OneDnD still has backgrounds and the ones presented in the Giant's UA even provide a Feat just like those in the OneDnD UA.
OneDnD still has Feats. Those presented in the Giants UA are even "Leveled" like those in the OneDnD UA.
The Path of the Giant Subclass matches the the current PHB progression for the Barbarian, which is completely unchanged in the OneDnD UA.
Based on what we do know, there is no reason to think that this book won't be just as useful with OneDnD as it is with the current rule set.
Yeah, I think releases in the run up to OneD&D will be compatible, or require only minor errata; the Dragonlance and Spelljammer books also have backgrounds with feats, Dragonlance also has levelled feats etc., so I'm assuming we'll see some kind of OneD&D compatibility errata either on release or soon after to make recent books compatible; the question is how far back that might go?
To my knowledge they haven't posted a full list of sub-classes that we should expect (though some as yet unpublished ones have been mentioned), so we don't really know which books might be made redundant at least as far as sub-classes are concerned. But we do know that there are going to be more sub-classes per class than in the 2014 PHB, so it's possible some from Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron will become redundant.
We might also see some kind of Dungeon Master's Guide advice for "porting" material that isn't replaced or errata'd, e.g- sub-class features moving to the new levels, though we'll need to see release candidate classes to know how realistic that might be to do.

Oh, I agree completely. Really, it doesn’t even seem too hard to adapt 2014 subclasses to 2024 classes. If you get the same number of subclass powers just at different levels, it seems pretty simple to just take them as they come up. To me, that still qualifies as backwards compatible, but I get a sense others will disagree. And all along, as sposta said, they’ve been cared to say their idea of backwards compatible means using 2024 characters with 2014-era adventures. That doesn’t mean people are getting that message, but they’ve been consistent.
There’s also that 5e is going to live on with (whispers) other publishers.
Kobold has a kickstarter right now for their own 5e based game. They probably hope it will turn out like Pathfinder did.
I am going to be honest and please don't take this personal.
I haven't liked anything that Kolbold Press has shown us about ToV. I think that their kickstarter will do just fine, but I really don't think that they will be the next Paizo. I could be wrong, but only time will tell.

Well, then 3.5 is compatible with 5e in the same way as 5e will be compatible with Not One Dnd. With some slight adaptations to monsters and skill checks. That just cements my view to be honest.

Nah, 3.5 had different saves and the monsters had different ratings and stuff. They mean directly backwards compatible. That’s why they aren’t changing the CRs of monsters to rebalance them for their abilities, they’re changing the abilities to rebalance them to their CR.

As sposta said, it’s more than slight adaptations. 3.5 didn’t have bounded accuracy or proficiency bonus. It had multiple kinds of armor class and attack types, every single spell would need to be re-written, the skill system — and it’s synergy bonuses — would have to be re-done, there were dozens and dozens of classes, many of which no longer exist, multiclassing was completely different, the list goes on. Certainly, you could take the story from a 3.5 adventure, and rebuild all the mechanics to make it fit 1D&D, sure. But this change, as I understand it and as I understand their goal, means that a 2014 module saying something has a DC of 15 will mean the same thing with 1D&D. Where a 3.5 DC 15 does not translate.

The new one D&D goliath may have been a race for the new book (Maybe renamed Giant KIN or some unique name)
It was NOT on the 2014 PHB but will be added to the 2024 PHB.
