I've made a Kobold Rune Knight... which is the most adorable thing ever and I love it, but I did want to check how the disadvantage works.
I'm a small creature wielding a heavy weapon (disadvantage), fighting in the sun (disadvantage) but my enemy is within 5ft of an ally (advantage) = normal attack roll, right?
Also, when I become a Giant (going from small to large, which I love btw), as long as I'm out of direct sunlight and the enemy is near an ally I can then get advantage

D&D, Youth Work and the Priesthood sadly do not typically interact... I do what I can!

never understood why the concept of shades never pops up in dnd. i mean most wielding masks use darkened glass capable of allowing you to watch a solar eclipse (don't quote me on that and ya i know wielding really isn't a thing in medieval fantasy but i imagine smiths use similar). i imagine a helm with built in darkened glass wouldn't be to far of a stretch.
as to the question my group handle it like so; small creature wielding a heavy weapon (disadvantage), enemy is within 5ft of an ally (normal attack ), fighting in the sun = (disadvantage) on the roll. so you would need 2 type of advantage to to negate the 2 types of disadvantage; at least that's how my party does it
Thanks Uthidar, I suppose that makes sense for double disadvantage (but up to my DM in the end)... one of my party member is a glass blower so I've been planning on getting her to make me some shades at some point (if stain glass exists in a world, then so can a 30%-60% opacity glass). I just also wanted to roleplay my character struggling with the sun for a while...

i did some digging and found that your first assumption was correct and mine is a guess a house rule.
from the PHB
"If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage."
Ah excellent, thanks Uthidar. I thought I had got the rules right on that, it’s part of the whole reason I went for that character design - as it is efficient despite being a poor race class match up which makes itself work great for role-play and optimisation (without being overpowered)

Sunlight Sensitivity affects more than the eyes, the sunlight burns their skin too. Shades wouldn’t cover it alone, they would need SPF 500 too.
Or you know, clothes. The issues (for Kobolds atleast) is the eyes, hence the disadvantage on visual Perception checks and attacks where either you or the target are in direct sunlight - tis blinding - everything else would be about comfort (in the same way that aquatic species don’t like dry land but don’t get disadvantage).

I immagini it must be fairly distracted to always feel like you have the worst sunburn ever.
It’s not the heat, it’s the light itself. Being subterranean they would have not evolved a defense mechanismsuch as melanin to protect themselves against UV rays. It’s kind of akin to albinism.
IRL there are subterranean species that are so light sensitive that even flash photography causes them physical pain such as the Human Fish.
What would be an efficient way to get access to the enlarge spell? And any DMs in the chat? How would you respond to a player becoming a huge creature in combat (regularly)?

What do you mean by “efficient?” Magic items, class/subclass, race...?? What are the parameters?
Duergar have it as a racial feature I believe. Rune Knight subclass has something similar as a feature. I’m sure there any number of magical items that could do it. Maybe a wand?
Ah, well from the above - a level 3 Kobold Rune Knight. But it seems like without a DM fiat of magic item then it requires a 3 level multi-class (which is a bit much for wanting 1 second level spell).

well the easiest way would be to befriend you parties magic user (if there is one). there may be better uses of a spell slot but from time to time it would be a great visual

Good point, I’m kind of picturing a big cloak like people wear in the desert... I’d imagine heat resistance magic armour would be desirable

Why specifically do you want to become Huge?

Who wouldn’t want a small kobold that can turn into Godzilla... but yeah it’s not something I’m going to build the entire character around.
Yeah, sounds like something you need to negotiate with your DM about.
