I'm curious what other people are doing about the 2024 PHB updates in their active campaigns. Will you be updating your characters to 2024 PHB versions, or keeping the old rules to finish out the campaign?
For my table, people are just now getting a hang of their characters and how to play them, so I worry about updating everything and slowing down play. But I also really want to use the new versions of features that clear up so much confusion or help with keeping play smooth.
So, what will you all be doing about your Current Campaigns when 2024 PHB comes out?
Personally I’m not going to be “upgrading” anything, my players are going to continue as they are although I might introduce new rules if I like them and it won’t upset anything too much. Having said that if one of my players dies and wants to create a new character using the 2024 template I’ll probably let them
Our DM is not going to change for the current campaign, but he will let us update our classes to 2024 if we want to. Unfortunately, I'm playing an Artificer Alchemist so I am screwed XD
I've been holding off starting a new campaign until Sept so we can dig fully into the updates which I am very much looking forward to. If I had an ongoing campaign I'd ask the players what they preferred and try to reach a consensus between making the switch or waiting until a fresh start.
We are ignoring the 2024 updates. Our current campaign will continue to use 5e (2014). Future campaigns will be Advanced 5e from ENWorld, Pathfinder 2e, or a non d20 system. Our group has pretty much migrated off of DnDBeyond entirely.
I plan to let my players rebuild their characters if it's workable. (The only one I expect to be a potential problem is the one with a hexblade warlock dip.)
I'll likely start using the updated rules, but that's barely going to be noticeable compared to the character stuff.
Our group has had a rather butterfly approach to campaigns, so we have a lot of campaigns that were paused while trying the next shiny new one. We’re keen to reboot one of those using the 2024 rules and my son’s busy preparing that. In the meantime, we’re using the wait to try to tie up some of those other campaigns. We just finished Shadow of the Dragon Queen and are planning to dust off Wild Beyond the Witchlight (we were about halfway). If we get the momentum going with that again, we’ll probably try to complete that before kicking off our first 2024-style homebrew campaign.
Given that all three books won't actually be out until early 2025 I'm not really worrying about changing over right now. once the PHB comes out Ill make adjustments to my NPC PCs but I'll keep the 2014 versions. Since I run a modified FR campaign the new rules will simply be the final manifestation of MYstra's new weave finally settling in. Of course Im not DMing right now so I don't have to worry that much until next year anyway.
I plan to start implementing parts of 2024 to my Vecna Eve of Ruin campaign as the campaign progresses as a way to show the effects of Vecna trying to rewrite the multiverse.
I am allowing the players (currently 2014 level 12) to re-roll 2024 level 10 characters (same classes-but may choose different subclasses) as a "multiverse ripple event" scrambles them (because Vecna has been modifying the realms). This rolls into them being connected to Vecna and brings them right into Vecna: Eve of Ruin.
I’m giving my players the choice to rebuild characters as close to what they have in the old rules as possible, and I expect that they will.
They’re level 10, so potential teething problems in the rebuild. I’m going to say they can’t change the class levels they have. If they have any feats that are made useless for them by rule changes then they can discuss with me if they want to change.
Invocations, metamagics should start as they are with their current builds, and spells as close as possible. I expect some will have more or fewer spells they can prepare.
We also have an artificer battlesmith, and I’m not sure exactly what to do with them. It seems fair that they should have weapon masteries?
In game this is going to be justified by the effect of a celestial alignment or something. Or maybe an NPC casting Wish.
I think my most recent campaign *will* want to apply the new rules and I'm all for it. How else to see how it all works than to try it at your table? TBH, I've had enough of everyone else's opinions of the changes, once the book is released and I can dig into myself, I'll see what I think of it.
As always, whatever my players feel will be the most fun is what I'll support.
No decision has been made yet, but it is unlikely that we will change until the current campaign ends. My gaming group tends not to change rulesets during the campaign, as most other edition changes (even 3 to 3.5 and then to PF) have a campaign restart with new characters.
I'm going to have all the characters in my game remake them using the '24 rules. I'll have them keep the same base class(es) and start them with the stats they rolled up initially but then level them up to their current level using the new book.
My table has been integrating each new rule as they come up. So we are half way to the 2024 already, when the book is released I as a DM will let my players spend enough time to update their character sheets to the updated rules and then we move forward. With this each player will get a 100% full respec due to the changes.

No intention of changing anything unless the players want to.

We will be taking a look at possible change over but it would basically be remaking our current characters using the new rules.

Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
