this is probably a common question but i havent found anything on it from looking it up,
what would be the process of making a homebrew weapon type?
im setting up a new campaign and two of my players have expressed an interest in using sythes as weapons, and since its kinda lame to have all the tools to set up sythes being an actual thing but just lack the know how to actually implement them ive come here.
what i want is for the weapon to be a Simple--1D6 Slashing damage--(2 handed, Heavy, Special)
my initial thought was to use maces but ive found that adding a modifier to the damage just adds an additional D6 slashing damage rather than replace the current d6 damage type from bludgeoning to slashing, and the autogen descriptions still refer to it as a mace seemingly without the ability to alter them (even via use of a subscription account that one of the players has) is there a way past this block or should i just have a running note on the weapon in an attempt to make things simple on the players without also being overwhelmed with keeping track of all that as a DM?
You used the wrong Modifier. The Modifier to change damage is: Modifier: Replace Damage Type->Subtype: [Damage Type*]. In your case you would use Slashing. Personally I would start with a handaxe and then simply Ignore Weapon Proprerty->Range, Ignore Weapon Property->Thrown, Weapon Property->Two-Handed if I wanted a d6 damage weapon, but I would personally use a quarterstaff instead and replace the damage type so it could be d6/d8 versatile instead.
thank you, I appreciate the recommendation, but I was giving scythes the additional rule of a scything blow that strikes multiple nearby opponents, which would be better on a lower damage weapon for the bracket I'm placing it in, especially once it as a base weapon type starts to receive magical variants and enchantments from the party/loot drops so that there is a bit of incentive to use other weapons still as you could get a higher damaging weapon in the forms of martial two handed/versatile weapons, or the use of a shield with other simple or one handed weapons so scythe players were really good at crowd control but would struggle a bit in a duel against another build that has higher defense or single target damage
