This video that I watched a while back was saying to make a character after you know what the story is about so that way when you make it, the character will fit the story. Is that the best way to decide on your character, or is there another way that I don't know about.

That’s my preferred method, it helps make sure you don’t feel like your character sucks simply because they don’t fit the campaign. For example, if it’s gonna be lots of dungeon crawls and fighting, a social character has less to do. If it’s a lot of RP and social encounters then the fighters and blasters have less to do.
You can always just make whatever you want (with DM approval of course) and make the best of it. If you don’t mind being suboptimized and prefer to roleplay something you like, even if it’s harder or you get less “camera time,” then that’s a great way to go. Ideally a good DM will help, but depending on if they’re running a module or something that may be more challenging.
Sometimes a really great character grows out of justifying a specific build. Other times a fantastic character comes to mind, and the hard part is fitting a build to it that makes sense.
Some people are better at doing one of those things than they are at the other.

And it's all valid.
Awesome, thank you.
Sense my groupe and I are nearing the end of my first time playing through a campaign, for my second character, I have a better idea on how I want to start playing my second character, and how he may or may not change\evolve as a character (and not just because of this thread).

I hear ya. I also feel like a player can still make a character, and then ask the DM if he\she how well the character that was made would work, and then see if the person could make any changes to help the character fit in more.

It's a personal choice. There isnt a right or wrong way.

Both make sense. I feel like it depends how your DM made his\her campaign too.
