I'm running a weekly D&D 5E Zoom game for 12-14 year-olds through my public library system, and I'd like to give a couple of my players the ability to run one encounter in D&D Beyond using that nice Encounter Builder. I use an overhead camera system over a battlemat or one of my floorplan books, moving the character pieces and monsters around based on player feedback across Zoom.
Our plan was for her to run the encounter through Encounter Builder, adjudicating combat and providing storyline; 'll play her character while she's GMing, and I'll continue to manage the camera work and movement of pieces.
But when my player creates the encounter, the button to "RUN" the encounter IS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN; that feature does not seem to be available to the players who come into my Campaign site using that special link,
So, how can my player run an encounter using the Encounter Builder in my campaign? Please help.
Not an ideal solution, but does zoom have an option to give control of your mouse/keyboard? If so you could have them run the encounter from your screen. Otherwise I'd suggest having them track turns on paper since they can at least reference monster stats in the encounter builder.
Thx Noksa, Zoom doesn't provide this feature, I'm faced with two choices:
1. Your suggestion, which works fine, and gets the kids used to the "REAL" way of running an encounter.
2. Hand out my Google account login/password so the player can take control of my account to create her encounter on MY account, then run it at the appropriate time, but..... nah, that isn't going to happen; way too complicated and frankly, unsafe.
So it's your suggestion that is most practical. Typically, before D&D Beyond, I have monster stats in front of me and I use a store-bought encounter/initiative board once initiative is set. I also create hit point pages, using groups of 10 circles to indicate totall HPs of each monster and mark them off when damage is done - or they can just count up or count down till the creature is dead.
Good luck, One other thought that's probably more complicated than helpful. They might be able to use excel or google sheets to make a simple tracker.
column 1 Player/monster name, column 2 monster current hp, column 3 initiative. If its formatted as a table they could then sort on the initiative column. one tab for the google sheet tracker, other tab open to ddb encounter builder to reference monster stats.
Creating a new account is free, giving that account a 1 month subscription is $6. I mean, the price of a couple of coffees doesn't seem too much for the convenience.

Only subscribers can run an encounter currently, because the combat tracker is in alpha.
