I'm still getting the hang on how to mechanically represent all my homebrew in a fully integrated, auto-calculating character sheet. My fighter has a belt that grants maximum healing on the first hit die he burns per day and I'm not content with just having that written on the side. My players deserve better.
How would I represent this in the details of the item in a way that allows him to activate this feature and remove a hit die in the process when he uses his regular hit die burns, such as action surges and short rests? I'm not really interested in having to separately track a resource on a character sheet with the primary appeal of automating everything. If I have to do that I'm probably just gonna stick to 3rd party software.
You cannot. The Hit Dice counter can only be accessed (and marked expended) when the character hits the Short Rest button. As to the dice themselves, they either automatically apply the results or they do not, and that can only be designed directly on the sheet in the short rest. You would have to list it as plain text, the player would have to uncheck the box indicating the auto apply, and then they would have to manually adjust their HP.
