Steppe elves (also known as grass elves, prairie elves and wind elves) are an unintentionally reclusive folk, living as nomads where grassy plains meet mountains. They do not hide from non-elves by intent, but a steppe elf tribe is light-footed and hard to track down, moving in ways understandable only to them and sister tribes and leaving little trace of themselves.
Appearance
They are usually darker than high elves, and an unexperienced observer might confuse a grass elf for a wood elf. Their skin tends to range from fair to olive-tinted brown, though darker complexion is not that unusual, and fair-skinned ones often tan quickly, with hair colours more inclined towards dark browns and black. Their clothing is often seen as simpler than that of other elves, and though it is usually tailored for more utilitarian purposes, especially everyday clothes, they do not lack in their love of colours and intricate patterns.
Nomadic Life
Steppe elves live in small nomadic tribes that consist of several bloodlines, but these tribes are not isolated from each other, and communication either via messengers and trackers or through other means like carrier animals, magic, or leaving messages for the next tribe to arrive at the old campsite is well-established.
The rare stranger, even if they are a non-elf, is usually greeted with hospitality, even if the hosts might appear somewhat distant and wary at first.
Most tribes tend to lean towards the Old Faith, but they do not scorn those that worship in temples, seeing gods as parts of one whole one must respect in its every aspect.
Steppe Elf Traits
Your steppe elf character has a variety of natural abilities, the result of a mix of elven refinement and harsh conditions.
Ability Score Increase: Your Constitution and Wisdom each increase by 1. Your Dexterity score decreases by 1 after applying the general racial trait.
Age: Similarly to other elves, steppe elves reach maturity at around 20 years of age, but are not considered adults till 100, and their lifespan reaches around 750.
Alignment: Steppe elves value freedom and self-expression highly, and they do not appreciate restrictions. They tend to lean towards Neutral and Chaotic aspects of life, and as their survival depends on mutual support, Evil steppe elves are rare.
Size: Steppe elves range from under 5 to slightly over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium.
Speed: Steppe elves are light on their feet. Your base speed is 35 ft.
Darkvision: You are as used to life under the night skies as you are to broad daylight. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Senses: You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Trance: Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Your Common might have an unusual accent.
Life on the Plains: Your nomadic life has taught you how to care for yourself and those around you. You are proficient in Survival. Choose either advantage in saving throws against being poisoned or proficiency in Medicine.
Steppe Elf Weapon Training: You have proficiency with the scimitar, shortbow, longbow, and dagger.
