Hey folks, my DM gave me the following magic item:
"Phantom Fists
While wearing these gauntlets, your unarmed strikes deal an additional 1d4 force damage. On a hit, you can force a creature of the size Large or smaller to make a DC 10 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, they are pushed back 10 feet and knocked prone. On a successful save, they are pushed back 5 feet and are not knocked prone. Prone targets are not pushed."
I would like to implement this as a magic item, but I cannot find a way to create a magic weapon or item that will replace the Monk's Unarmed Strike or augment it mechanically. I can of course simply make a magic item that does nothing but has the description in the notes, but I would like to be able to have the additional 1D4 roll at the same time as the regular damage, and also add the Push as a free action in my combat list. Any ideas how to do this?
I don't believe there's any way to add this damage to unarmed strikes; we're a bit limited in what modifiers can actually do, and can't really control what the damage modifier is added to (for a magic weapon it's added to the weapon, but you don't want that as there's no unarmed strikes "weapon" type).
I'd probably do as you suggest and add the magic item with the description just for book-keeping in equipment, but what you can then do is add the effects as custom actions to your sheet (go to Actions and in the top right corner there should be a "Manage Custom" option). I'd add them something like:
Phantom Fists: General action, Dice Count 1, Die Type d4, Damage Type Force, Activation Type special, Display As Attack, you can also optionally add a brief description under Snippet if you want some text to appear with it on the sheet reminding that it applies to unarmed strikes or such.
Phantom Push: General action, Save Type strength, Fixed Save DC 10, Activation Type special, and put in the snippet a brief summary with the effects. You can set this to Display As Attack too if you want for the reminder.
This gives you convenient references on your character sheet. Unfortunately since Magic Items can't currently have Actions there's no way to add these to the item itself; you could homebrew a feat with the actions and add that as well (same basic options as above) but if you're the only one with this item then it may not be worth it, plus custom actions on your sheet update instantly, whereas custom feats can take a while for changes to appear.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

It's been 5 years since this topic was created, and there's still no fix to this? The section for homebrewing items here on DND Beyond is, in my opinion, the only section that needs to have a solid once over.
Adding damage rolls (and types) to unarmed strikes (and rolling them automatically)
Adding damage rolls (and types) to weapons (and rolling them automatically)
These were just two examples which should be simple, right?
How? — I can modify the attack roll bonus without any issues, but it seems like I can only change the damage via 'Customize Attack'. Is there a setting I'm overlooking?

It is not possible at this time.

It works now.
