I’m trying to homebrew a weapon (based on a rapier) that will cast a specific spell upon hit, but right now all it does is add the spell to my character’s spell list. how do i fix this?
Magic items grant the spell. If you want it to apply "on hit" - just say so in the description.

Keep in mind that the character sheets don’t actually interact with anything and there is no way for it to know when a hit was achieved or not because there’s no way for the sheet to know what the Target AC is. (The sheet can’t even tell is an actual attack was rolled or if the button just got hit accidentally.)
