Greetings fellow makers. I am trying to finalize a new homebrew subclass for the ranger, and I am having some trouble gauging how powerful the suggested ability is, and thus, how limited the use should be. Here's the current wording:
As an action, you can create a 10 foot radius cylinder centered on yourself that obscures the area around you in [dust and debris]. The aura moves with you, and lasts up to 1 minute. You can dismiss it with no action required. You and your allies in the aura can use your reactions to move half their speed when an enemy comes within 5 feet of them. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.
Currently, I'm looking at this for the level 11 subclass slot. Do you feel this power needs a limited number of uses per day, or that the action economy is good enough for it to be reusable at-will? Suggestions and feedback are welcome!
You don’t list a maximum height for the cylinder, I’m guessing that it’s sposta be 15 feet guessing by the radius (10 feet above the PC’s space). You also don’t need to put “[dust and debris]”in brackets unless it isn’t really dust and debris and you changed it for this post. You also don’t specify if the area is light or heavy obscurement.
For a full minute the PC and it’s companions can disengage as a reaction with free a half-speed move as long as they are in that cylinder, and it doesn’t require “concentration (as if on a spell).” That’s pretty powerful, but not astronomical. I would start with 1ce per “short or long rest” and see how it goes. This subclass won’t be done before you do at least a few months of playtesting before it’s ready for publication anyway, so that’s as good a place to start as any, and let the playtesting tell you if you need to change it.
