I want to go over how to make any kind of weapon you want, rolling quite a few different damage die(dice). If you are smart about setting your Weapon Properties and Ignore Weapon Properties, you can make it look seamless in your dndbeyond character sheet. You can homebrew any of the following Melee weapons with minimal changes:
Name
Damage
Whip
1d4
Shortsword
1d6
Rapier
1d8
Glaive
1d10
Greataxe
1d12
Double-Bladed Scimitar*
2d4
Greatsword
2d6
* You cannot remove the Special weapon property. Add Ignore everything after this point. at the end of the item's description.
I wanted to make a scalable weapon with the following properties: Martial, Finesse, Light and cause radiant damage.
Add a Modifier: Ignore Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Two-Handed
Add a modifier: Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Finesse
Add a modifier: Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Light
Add a modifier: Replace Damage Type. Modifier Subtype: Radiant
* The Special property cannot be removed from a weapon. The Special property info does not show on the item's description when viewed in the character sheet.
Add a Modifier: Ignore Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Heavy
Add a Modifier: Ignore Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Two-Handed
Add a modifier: Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Light
Add a modifier: Weapon Property. Modifier Subtype: Finesse
Add a modifier: Replace Damage Type. Modifier Subtype: Radiant
What if you want more damage dice options? There are ranged weapons that have more damage dice options:
Name
Damage
Revolver
2d8
Rifle, Hunting
2d10
Bad News (Exandria)
2d12
Laser Pistol
3d6
Laser Rifle
3d8
Antimatter Rifle
6d8
Now these can't quite replicate the complete look that the melee weapons can, but at the end of the day we just want the item's name and damage dice right. I've not found a way to make ranged attacks look more like melee attacks. But here's how these looks:
We can't remove the weapon properties: Firearms, Ammunition, Reload, or Range (I've tried to Ignore Range and it doesn't remove from these weapons). But we can still add Finesse and Light to each and obviously add your own description. Everyone just needs to know these are melee weapons and have a range of 5 feet. Our To Hit and Damage Rolls roll with the right info though, so that's all we want at the end of the day.

So that means anyone can make a homebrew weapon that uses any damage dice from 1d4 through 2d12, then 3d6, 3d8, and 6d8.
