Basically, if you roll a nat 1 but your modifier brings it to a success, you succeed but barely. If you fail even with modifiers, it is a critical failure. It is always a critical failure if you have disadvantage, even if you would succeed with modifiers. Just an idea.
Are you talking for attacks, checks & saves, or all three? Because for checks & saves, if you roll a 1 but your modifiers bring the total up to a success, you already succeed RAW, and for attacks a roll of 1 is an automatic miss RAW.
i dislike the critical fail concept (for attacks), beyond it just being a fail. It means the better you are at attacking (ie 11th level fighter) the bigger chance there is that you do something stupid, when it should be the opposite.

Exactly. I'll add two more points:
A lot has been said about the gap between the power of spellcasting classes and non-casters. Critical fail rules on attacks make this even worse.
The penalties for biffing an attack that most people propose are usually either inconsequential or they ruin the fun for the relevant player. Nobody likes to waste their turn running around and picking up dropped weapons because of a sloppy house rule.
