I'm DMing my first Zelda-themed game soon and i'm trying to build the races in DND Beyond so my players can use them to build their characters.
I'm chugging through it for the most part but there are some parts where I just cant seem to get the parameters on the website to match what I'm going for. Could anyone please let me know the best settings to build this skill into a character using the custom ability screen? I realize that there might not be a way for it to jump to advantage if they're already proficient, and that we'll need to keep track of the climate on our own, but if I could at least get the proficiency bonus in there it would be great.
Desert Born. You may add your proficiency bonus to Wisdom (Survival) checks made in arid climates. If you already have proficiency in Wisdom (Survival) checks, you instead have Advantage on such checks. You need only half as much water as other races.
I can only indicate "survival" in the Modifier Subtype Box, which is already taken for proficiency bonus.
I’m not entirely sure what precisely you are asking, but I’ll do my best.
To grant proficiency in the Survival skill you would use the following Modifier:
Modifier: Proficiency->Subtype: Survival
To grant Advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks you would use the following Modifier:
Modifier: Advantage->Subtype: Survival
To do the “if you already have proficiency” part you would attach two Options to the trait, one that grants proficiency, and the other that grants advantage, and then trust the player to select the appropriate Option for their character. You can learn how to properly set up options in the Homebrew Subclasses & Species FAQ #1: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq). If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
If it were me I would make my life easy and just grant Advantage whether you have proficiency or not and call it a day. The proficiency will then take care f itself from whatever source it comes and that way you won’t have to worry about it. But that’s me, you do whatever you feel is most appropriate for your homebrew.
