I am trying to add the thrown property to a home-brewed magic item I am making for one of my players and I am trying to add the thrown property to a weapon based on a scimitar. I got "Modifier Type"="Weapon Property" and "Modifier Subtype"="Thrown" but it keeps coming up Range: 5ft/5ft on the character sheet. no matter how many ways I have tried to make it the usual 20/60 I can not seem to get it to work. What am I doing incorrectly? Please Help me.
I have also tried adding: “Modifier Type"="Weapon Property" and "Modifier Subtype"="Range" and tried various numbers in various fields to no avail as well. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure that there is a way to add a proper range to a non-range weapon aside from just stating so in the item's description. I recently made a thrown Greataxe weapon and used a Dwarven Thrower as the base... and there don't seem to be any proper modifiers attached to the Dwarven Thrower (unless I'm missing something) so it seems to be something that just has to be remembered as part of the item's description rather than anything that will appear on its displayed stats.
In the Modifier section, when you select Modifier Type "Ranged Attack" is one of the options, then you just have to set the damage type and everything.
I know i'm coming to this late, but literally the only difference between a weapon that can be thrown and one that can't is that a thrown weapon has the thrown note and range. you can just add that to any weapon you like by customizing it. not sure if that does what you're looking to do but i can't think of any need that would require more than that.
I'm confused by Sposta asking for help on homebrew. Either the account got hacked, or body snatchers have invaded south east PA.
As for what needs more than customization, probably the fighting style from Tasha's if they ever add a 2nd entry for the thrown damage, and having the range show in the Range column.
That post is over a year old as it is currently Feb 8, 2021. So the other plausible explanation is that was something I only got around to figuring out a year ago. I mean, I don’t just know all of this stuff, I spent a lot of time picking that sucker apart to teach myself how it all works, and learning whatever I couldn’t figure out by seeking such answers by those who had come before and might know more. Part of why I spend so much time and effort trying to help others with what I have learned is just my attempt to pay it forward. I think it may be working, because periodically new usernames appear answer such questions before I have even see those questions sometimes. It makes me happy.
Or it could be the Mandala Effect as the early signs that the Mians were actually correct but that worlds die slow so it will take a wile for the various realities to all collapse in upon one another. 🤷♂️
Well.... perhaps treat it as an improvised thrown weapon. Then it would use Str for attack and damage rolls, there would be no Proficiency bonus to the attack without the Tavern Brawler feat, and it would have a range of 20/60 and do 1d4 bludgeoning damage. Of course, the damage might get bumped to a higher die. And the theoretical Dwarf would also likely take damage, but I would personally give them a Con save for half damage since the Dwarf is prepared for it and can brace themselves for impact.

If a completely hypothetical dwarven totem barbarian with a 780 lb. carrying capacity and 26 strength acquired a cloud giant's rock, would it be an improvised weapon(About the d4 damage, not the lack of proficiency. The dwarf has tavern brawler)?
By chance did you ever figure out how to add the thrown property and give it proper range? I know how to add it just don't know how to give it proper range. At the moment I'm trying to make a normal hammer that is a d6 bludgeoning damage with the thrown property.

I don’t work here, I just live here. No, the DDB Devs have not added this function yet.
I also wish the range didn't end up as (5/5), but for now I deal with it by putting "Actual Range (20/60)" (or whatever) in the Notes for the item when it's in my Equipment.

I was afraid of that. I wish DDB would either make these things work properly, or not put the option in there until it can.
I am still hoping someone who has figured it out will swoop in and save my day.

The best I could figure out was attaching a Ranged attack to the weapon that matches the stats it would have as a thrown attack.

As a follow-up, what Range & Damage should I use for a goliath tossing dwarves at a orkish horde?
You know... theoretically. <cough>

I have a weird sense of humor.

Dang. That's unfortunate. You really would think just adding Weapon Property - Thrown and then an option for a range would do it.
I also wish the range didn't end up as (5/5), but for now I deal with it by putting "Actual Range (20/60)" (or whatever) in the Notes for the item when it's in my Equipment.
