Hello! We just started using D&D Beyond for our adventuring group and I am absolutely in love with the Homebrew capabilities. My DM gave all of us the chance to tell him something that we wanted, whether it exists in the game or not, and he'd fit it in. I'm a tanky paladin and I recently got a shield that gives +1 additional AC to the normal AC boost of shields, but also can be thrown and bounce back or ricochet. Literally like Captain America. I tried to homebrew it together but Shields are technically "armor" and I can't override it and make it be a weapon with +1 properties.
To make things more interesting, it actually exists only as a throwing weapon and not as a melee weapon, but it still uses STR as it's main stat. I can't figure out how to make a thrown weapon and have it override again to use Strength, so I just built a melee weapon and added a throwing property to it. I can't change its range, so I just have to play that by ear.
Ultimately what I ended up doing was making two items on my person, one as armor that doesn't require attunement, and one that is a weapon that DOES require attunement to give me bonuses. Since I'm doing so many things that are counter-intuitive, is it possible to create this to how I am using it or is the system not built that way?

Oh, Finesse weapon okay! I was trying to make add Range to a melee weapon, so I'll play around with that. What is the best way to customize other stats after that? I'm mainly looking at Range (boomerang default is 60/120, but I want to cut that down) and the damage die (want to change it from 1d4 to 1d8). I found the Damage bonus so I can manually adjust that "add" STR modifier and not just my proficiency bonus so that's good.
Thanks so much for your help. I'm fairly new at D&D in general so I doing my best to learn all the syntax.
I too want to create a shield warrior. Either captain america-esk or some sort of dual welding weapons. As to your cap shield id go 20/60 for thrown property but only the 20 ricochets back. Maybe a character can attempt to catch it (like bucky) with a str saving throw compared to the throwers as a draw back?

Hi cdschwanz, welcome to the forums!
It sounds like you may want to make a boomerang and give the finesse property and a +3 to AC.

The easiest thing for you to do is just add a custom attack to your character sheet :)
