So my niece has been joining my at home tabletop game lately. She is also having issues with math and other school subjects. I am thinking of creating a 5e class/subclass where if she solves a math problem she triggers an ability/spell. Before I set off on this does anyone in the hivemind have any suggestions, ideas, or warnings that I may keep in mind?
Right now I am leaning towards a sorcerer subtype using a concept similar to wild magic tables, and the Mizzium Apparatus random spell tables. Where once per turn she could use an action or a bonus to solve a math problem and if she gets it right in a set amount of time (thinking like 2-3 min) she can roll a die and cast a spell from the Apparatus' table based on her roll.
Another option I was thinking of is just using the math problems as a substitution for spell components.

A math based subclass is one of my favorite subclass concepts. But before we get into the weeds, it's important to make sure your niece is on board. If she's not, then the game isn't fun for her and by extent, it won't be fun for the rest of the table.
Wizard is an excellent candidate for a subclass, you might only need to reflavor spells with that. If you like the Mizzium Apparatus spell tables, you may want to consider the School of Invention from UA. If your niece is a newcomer to D&D and you're staying with the math concept, you may want to keep the mechanics simple and begin with one of the PHB subclasses.
