I'm working on a helmet that gives you a breath weapon the same as a dragonborn, and I've recently learned about snippet codes. I'm trying to code it in such a way that the item automatically calculates the save DC for your targets, and I'm using the code {{8+modifier:con+proficiency}} (basically how a normal dragonborn breath weapon works) but it doesn't work when I add the item to my test character. This leads me to two possible conclusions, either snippet codes won't work in an item description, or I've coded it wrong. Anyone have any insights for me? If either of these are the case, does anyone know how to make the description calculate the DC automatically?
Unsure on this, and probably you'll have to wait on someone else's input - but what about making the helmet cast Dragon Breath on you (on a charge limit, no conc.)? - since you would be adding a spell to that, there would be an effect added onto it from the beginning, and no need to delve into coding.
Snippet codes only work in Snippet fields. In the Description field, you'll just have to use "The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus." (I grabbed that from the Dragonborn Breath Weapon trait description.)
You can use this shorter snippet tag, by the way: {{savedc:con}}

It is supposed that magic items have a set Save DC established during the items creation and based upon the creator’s Spell Save DC at that time. Magic items are not intended to draw stats like that from the user.
