I have the base modifier set to be 2d6 psychic damage
"At higher level scaling" is selected, and set to Character Level
I have created 3 "at higher level" modifiers for character levels 6, 11, and 16; which should make the damage 3d6, 4d6, and 5d6 respectively.
I've added the spell to the homebrew race as a racial trait, and it shows up on the character sheet with 2d6 being the damage roll. However, if I change the character to level 6, 11, or 16, the damage still shows 2d6.
I've tried adding the spell to a standard class character (sorcerer) and playing with the levels there, and the same thing is happening.
Anything additional I need to do to get this to work?
Cantrips increase in damage at 5th, 11th, and 17th levels, not 6th, 11th, and 16th.
When you did the “at higher levels” how did you set them up?
After you save all of that, you have to re-save the whole spell again and then you sit up to 15 minutes to ensure that the changes got pushed through to the character sheet.
Did you ever get this sorted? I believe I am having a similar problem with a reskinned Armor of Agathys spell. I have the homebrew set to scale via character level. Initial temp hit points and damage are a fixed value (5 each). The intention is to then have those fixed values increase by 5 each at level 5, 15, and 20. It seems like the second I add anything in the "at higher levels" section, it breaks the damage display in the character sheet. e.g. if I delete everything out of the "at higher levels" section, the spell displays with the initial 5 value for damage. As soon as I add anything in the higher level section the damage box appears empty other than the damage type icon indicator. At level 5, I would expect to see a value of 10 (5 initial + 5 fixed from the level 5 scale).

The only spells that scale off of Character Level are Cantrips. Leveled spells like Armor of Agathys cannot scale off of character level and must instead scale off of “spell scale.”
Armor of Agathys as a Cantrip is ridiculously overpowered.
Cantrips increase in power at levels 5, 11, and 17, not 5, 15, and 20.
After you add/change anything you must always re-save the entire Homebrew using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under “Basic Information.” After that it can take up to 20 minutes for the system to catch up.
Please post a link to your homebrew so a Moderator or Staffer can look into it for you. They can see it even if it is not published.
I appreciate the responses. I agree 100% that this shouldn't be a cast at will cantrip. My original intent was to reskin it in terms of description, how it leveled with a character, and to make it something that can only be cast once per day or short rest (haven't decided yet).
I changed it to a cantrip solely because I feel I am battling the homebrew creation system and, as you indicated, it seems to be required for leveling via character level. I already have it set up to where it is a feat that gives access to the spell with a charge of 1 use per day or per short rest (haven't decided). That part is working even with the spell listed as a cantrip. It is merely the damage portion that appears broken.
I assume this is because leveling is locked to 5, 11, and 17. I'll try switching to those levels and see if that fixes it. I admit that will be a little annoying if it does the trick. The tooltip in the homebrew tool throws those out as examples, but does not read as if those are set/required.
No. It’s because of the “fixed value” thing. I’m pretty sure that simply won’t work for a Cantrip to add a specific fixed value. I could be wrong however.
You might be right. Took forever to push the update to the character sheet, but still no luck after changing the scaling to 5, 11, and 17. That is fairly annoying given the verbiage in the tool tips. It sounds like it should just be adding "additional points" via a fixed value to the existing fixed values from the base modifiers. Unless I am just missing something, this appears to just not function the way I would have hoped.
I guess I can leave the icon broken and just include the additional benefits in the description, but that puts more strain on my newbie players to have to remember this. Or I guess place the onus on myself to manually update the spell when they hit certain levels.

When you homebrew the effect or class or whatever you have to go to edit action and scroll all the way to the bottom until you find LEVEL OVERRIDE!!
While that is true for adding Actions to homebrewed Races, subclasses, and feats, it has nothing to do with homebrewed Spells, which is what this thread is all about.
Hello, I have created a homebrew spell for a homebrew race, and I'm having issue with the damage increasing as the character's level increases.
First off, links to the spell (it's set to sorcerer, but it's being used by a banshee monk): https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/539957-screams-of-the-dead
I've added the spell to the homebrew race as a racial trait, and it shows up on the character sheet with 2d6 being the damage roll. However, if I change the character to level 6, 11, or 16, the damage still shows 2d6.

Link does not work.
1) Make it public
2) Link to the public page, not the editable page
Whoops.. never posted on the forum before.
I've edited the link on the original post, and will include here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/539957-screams-of-the-dead
A few points.

My homebrew spell is set as a cantrip. Edit: here is a screenshot of the rest of the setup:

I just think that the system cannot add fixed values in that way. It can only do what the official stuff does, and that isn’t one of themZ
