I'm working on a race called half-genies, which are inspired by the half-genies from the Shantae series. I have the practical details ironed out, I just need to write the description and such, and I've hit a wall. Any ideas, comments, proposals, etc? Anything helps!

I'm not totally done, hence why I'm asking for help. I mainly need help with the history and such of the race, rather than stats and racial features. As for those, however, I've given a +2 to Charisma and a choice of +1 to either Wisdom or Intelligence, levitation (unsure what level I'll grant that yet, thinking 1 but not sure), three support/utility cantrips of your choice from I list I've made, proficiency with scimitars, and proficiency with Arcana checks. You also get Primordial as a language, but that came with Genasi.
Maybe they were made from shapeshifting genies who couldn't keep their pants up doing the deed with humanoids. Or maybe they were born from their essence etc.
Genies are created from a conflagration of an elemental plane coming in contact with a soul. Perhaps genieborn was that process gone wrong?
The following is a series of questions to get you thinking about the genieborn and to begin writing. Do genieborn live on the elemental planes? What do genies and genasi think of them? How do different elements interact? Do they act like the genie of the same element or do they act the complete opposite, almost an act of rebellion. If they live on the elemental planes why do they come to the material plane? If they live on the material plane, where are they and why is this the first we’re hearing about them? Do they live together in groups? Are they mistaken as genasi? Do they mind that? Why do they adventure? As a people are they missing something? Do they adventure to find each other? Do they feel a strong need to fight evil?

I'm trying to figure out what features from Shantae would be included in a half-genie Race. I know for sure there would have to be some kind of hair attack, which is fairly simple since functionally it would just be an unarmed strike that deals more than the normal amount of damage (probably just a d4). Then after that she has her shape shifting abilities. I suppose it could take the form of a once-per-day polymorph, limited in choice by the forms offered in the game. Although maybe since she uses dancing to transform, maybe she could cast polymorph on herself as a ritual, and the forms available expand as the character levels up. The ritual keeps it from being something that can be whipped out too easily and forces the player to think more carefully about what they're going to do with it.

These are both really helpful! Thanks, and I'll be sure to post the link here when I'm done! And if you two would like any credit, I could always add that to the description if you like, since you both have been huge helps! And ooh, I like the idea of the ritual polymorph, and the hair whip! Maybe the hair whip can just have the properties of a regular whip?
Yeah, just using whip stats should be relatively balanced. I'm glad you like the idea of a ritual polymorph... it seemed like the simplest way to translate the dance-magic from the games to 5e. But yeah, it would be nice to get credit as like... an advisor or something.
you should probley think like genies are elements so you could like make diffrent shapes and racil traits for the elements that the element part is and like make humanoid elementals

you don't know what peace is until a freaking dragon turtle sits down at your feet and starts acting like a puppy.
It seems like the hair-whip attack and the animal shapes ability would be class features rather than race features, though. Play it as a reflavored druid with a whip-style natural weapon added on.

It does sound like it would be a lot easier to balance as a class feature than as a racial feature. That's one of the hard things about trying to bring something from another franchise into D&D... according to the lore from the Shantae Games its her race that gives her these abilities, but to keep things from being imbalanced with how powerful some of these traits are it would make more sense to give them out as part of a class.

Yeah, I decided to scrap the Transformation Dance, as it seemed to overpowered. I am keeping the hair whip, however. And perhaps it gains another d4 of damage at certain levels?

Sounds like the genasi from the Elemental Evil Players Companion (which is free). Have you taken a look at them? They have some great art.

Yeah, that's what I used as my base, but I always found Genasi... kinda lame. They do have good art, though.

I agree. I love genasi as a concept but I think they need a stronger individual identity to stand out. What do you have right now?

Do you know when this will be done?

I feel like it should be a 1d4 + strength mod slashing damage natural weapon.

Maybe the dance is you casting polymorph on yourself as a ritual?
I was thinking that, but how long would the dance take?

A ritual spell takes 10 minutes to cast but doesn't expend a spell slot. You can lower the time to cast though.
