This is just a really rough outline idea for a character, I kind of just wanted to workshop it and see what people thought or any other takes on it etc. Also this might just be a fairly common backstory/character idea I really don't know, but either way fleshing it out is something to do if people want to sort of add their own spin
essentially, this person travels from town to town, land to land, reading up on lore and legends, looking for any kind of 'prophecies' or fables or just the hopes and wishes of the citizens, and basically plays off of that, pretending to be whoever or have whatever the people were 'fated to encounter'. They make a living off the people's generosity and have made many different names for themself all over. Really just a literally legendary con artist.
That's all I've really got right know, obviously mechanics wise they'd probably have to have pretty high intelligence, being quite well read and stuff, but other than that and probably charisma, I feel like the others are kind of flexible. And the criminal background has a few traits that would work well imo but I don't know, it's not much but I think there could be room for a decent story, like what led them down this path? Has it always worked out? Idk, I'm interested to see what people think
I'm not sure a high Intelligence is need so much as a reasonable 14+ Charisma for convincing others you are what you say you are.
Easy option would 2 levels of Warlock with a fiend or fey patron for Mask of Many Faces (Disguise Self @ Will), then you just need spells to help ingratiate yourself into society to learn stories, legends and secrets, multiclass Bard (lore, whisper or glamour) would likely better than Wizard for this. When you get bardic expertise then add that to charisma based skills. And don't forget spells to hide your true self (Nystuls Magical Aura and Non Detection but you'd need to use bardic magical secrets to get Nystul's).
Harder option would be go Rogue (Inquisitive ro Mastermind) and rely on disguise kits and non magical ways of do things.

* Need a character idea? Search for "Rob76's Unused" in the Story and Lore section.
Sounds close to my players barbarian sage, being a much more intelligent than the standard ones (but not by much) but focusing more on strength. Arcane trickster, mixed with glamour bard maybe?

thanks kids
Huh
I would consider the Charlatan background. I would think about either Lore Bard or Wizard (probably Bard for the Con-Artist angle).
I would also watch a Star Trek Next Gen episode entitled Devil’s Due for inspiration.
