I am sure this question has been already answered a numerous time; however, I was not able to find the solution on my own.
So here is a situation. For my homebrew game I am creating a Fighter subclass called an Eldritch Battle Master (EBM).
The idea is that at level 11th the character gains access to a limited number of cantrips and spells of an Eldritch Knight.
However, I do not understand how to add the spellcasting possibility to a subclass. I have copied a spellcasting feature from an Eldritch Knight subclass to my homebrew EBM.
But it is still not working...
There are no unavailable spells at level 11.
Can someone clarify how to add such a feature?
Thank you!
Below is a table of the spells and cantrips available by each character level.
When you add the “Spellcasting” feature it adds a set table. There’s no way to change that. If you have them separate actions at different levels, one action to cast 1st level spells, and the other to cast 2nd level spells you could get close. It just would be in the “actions” section instead of the “spells” section. Not sure how to handle “spells known” without them being listed as “at will” in the spells section. That’s the closest I can get you with the current homebrew tools.
While editing a class feature Spellcasting I managed to add a class feature option "SPELLS". There I can add, for example, cantrips and level 1 spells for a Wizard. But the problem is that I can't add these cantrips and spells, so they would be avaliable for the character when this character level up. For example, 1 cantrip and one spell on level 10, 2 cantrips and 3 spells on level 13.
I see. And maybe I've missed that, but how once can set parameters for the Spellcasting feature like the number of spells and cantrips per level or a school of magic? Just by coping the spell table in the description like the one in my first message in this thread?
No. You cannot change it. You can change which spells, but you cannot change # is spell slots, or number of spells or Cantrips known. It will always use the exact same table as the Eldritch Knight.
No. It will always give you the exact same table that the Eldritch Knight gets. You could leave everything blank and it will only ever give you the exact same table that the Eldritch Knight gets. There is no way to change the table whatsoever.
You can not make a character with the spell progression table that you want.
But how does the subclass creation tool understands that I'm adding a Spellcasting class feature? By the presense of the table? By the name of the class feature?
How does it undestand that this is an Eldritch Knight spellcating, not a wizard one, for example?
To be clear, I'm adding a Spellcasting feature to a Battle Master template.
Simply by adding a feature named “Spellcasting” is it. Everything else can just say “blahblahblah” and it won’t change a thing. The only “Spellcasting” subclass feature that exists is the one used by the Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster and they are identified except for which schools of magic they have access to. Since we can only affect Subclass features, not base Class features, by default that’s the only one we can use.
Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster are both “1/3 Casters” (as opposed to “Half Casters” like Ranger, Paladin, and Artificer, or all of the “Full Caster” classes), so this is the “1/3 Caster” spell progression feature simply named “Spellcasting.” If you just add a feature named “Hex Warrior” you can give any character the Hexblade’s feature (without the additional proficiencies) and they could use Charisma instead of Str/Dex for attack and damage rolls. “There’s power in names.”

Thanks for the help.
I've actually managed to add somу spells via feature options, but I don't get how to make the spell availability scale up to level...
what do you mean? Do you mean how many spells they get to know?

If you are using the “Spellcasting” feature you don’t need that. You just add them to to the list of specific spells.
