I'm completely new to DMing and also quite new to DnD but I've consumed a bunch of streams including amazing homebrewed worlds. I obviously want to go all the way to create something equally fun for my friends. But time is a limited resource and so I was thinking about using the setting of a fantasy novel that I'm writing anyway and that I am putting a lot of time and love into. Thing is: Neither the races nor the magic system of DnD fit into my setting. Races I think might be easy to homebrew, but since I'm new to my game I don't think I'll have the capacity to rewrite every spell to fit my narrative. Also I feel like I'm quite protective of this world and the thought of my friends potentially not liking it is the worst.
If you have any ideas on that topic or maybe even tried a similar thing I'd be happy about some tipps :)
Not even close to a lawyer, but be careful of copyright/ip issues. If one of your players says or invents something that’s kind of close to something that happens in the book, and you do get it published, there could be legal claims that they are owed a portion of royalties as a co-creator. Even if the thing they say was something you wrote in the book before they said it, it can be tough to prove who’s idea it was. Maybe your players are good friends, but if money starts rolling around, things can change. Of course, I could just be paranoid.

Hi folks!

This is the best advice I can give you:
I know, you’re like, “what?” But legitimately, if you pick out the right videos from that series it will go into just about everything you are asking.
