So I have an idea for a monk, but I need some feedback to see if it's crazy or not. Basically, my person is (was) a human from a family of sorcerers. Their power comes from a strain of gold dragon in their veins, and this character has grown up in this strong sorcerer family (noble, for background), and has always been training to be a powerful sorcerer. He even seems to have one of the strongest gold dragon bloodlines in generations; he's got golden eyes.
One night, he has a vision where he comes across a yellow bird (canary) with a broken wing on a path. He picks it up, heals it, and it flies away. Suddenly an old man shows up, pats him on the shoulder, and he wakes up to find he's been turned into a gold dragon (gold eyes included), and forcibly been turned into a monk class.
Basically, the old man in the vision was Bahamut, who goes around in disguise teaching monks and stuff. I got a lot of this idea from Fizban's Treasury.
I did a manual roll for this character, and my dex, wis, and cha are all 15 or above (legit don't know how that happened, but I'm not complaining). STR - 11/DEX - 18/CON - 14/INT - 15/WIS - 16/CHA - 15. One, this seems like a VERY high spread of stats. I might actually nerf him, cuz ZOINKS SCOOB.
I was thinking the character could keep leveling in monk, then at level 4 automatically takes the magic initiate (sorcerer) feat as a tie back to his history. Thoughts? Feedback?
I also thought his background could be he's got the strongest bloodline in his family of sorcerers in generations, but he's a rebellious guy who's sick of all the family drama and pressure, so when that vision happens he welcomes this DRASTIC change in his fate with open arms, and with a lot of anticipation and excitement about charting his own course in life, in which case the magic initiate feat would be more optional. Family is disappointed and upset, so either he sneaks away, or they try to keep what happened to him hush-hush. Thanks for taking a look guys!
As a sidebar, with the second history option (happy for the change), I'd prbly look at taking like 3 levels in fighter. Get a few extra perks for all the fancy hits he makes.
So if he is a Gold Dragon, then why can't he turn back into dragon form after being turned into a humanoid Monk?
The Sorcerer thing doesn't really mesh well mechanically with Monks. They use entirely different attribute scoress for their main abilities. If you want to this for the sake of role-playing, it would make more sense to go Warlock/Sorc. Say that the PC's patron is Bahamut. Both classes key off of CHA. You rolled unusually good stats, but Monks are one of the most vulnerable martial classes.
If you want to have survivability and be useful to the party, it's better to pick a WIS-based spellcaster if you really want to go the magic route and combine with Monk. In that case, pick Cleric for your multi-class. Instead of worshipping a listed deity in the PHB, worship Bahamut.
If the most interesting thing that happens to your character (like being turned into a gold dragon) happened in their backstory, you’ve done it wrong.
I think I see what you’re going for though, I would just dial it down from 11 to closer to 6.5ish. That way you have the campaign to to dial back up. Coming from a Sorcerous family of a strong Draconic Bloodline, and being raised to meet certain expectations makes sense. (Heck, take Variant Human as your race and taking Magic Initiate* at character creation would make even more sense than at 4th.) Then having a vision that their path is destined to take another direction makes sense too. Maybe just make the whole “gold dragon” thing more metaphorical than literal. (I’m assuming that you’re gonna go Way of the Ascendant Dragon; yeah?)
*(I would pro’ly take utility type spells. As a Monk, you’re not likely to interact well with the spells from that feat in combat. However, having a couple of cantrips for non-combat occasions, and solid 1st-level spell you can rely on day after day will be handy.)
Thanks for the feedback! I do think it's a tough character to pull together with a wide variety of needed stats.
Just to reply to a few things:
song_of_blues: the character was originally a human sorcerer, until he had the vision, which is why he was turned into a dragonborn. It would be basically the same as draconic rebirth (fizban's treasury). I do agree that sorcerer to warlock would make sense stat-wise. I was trying to find a way to draw fizban into the background of a character, because I'm just a giant dragon nerd lol.
IamSposta: Is it really that big of a jump for character background? I legit have never actually played a campaign before, so I don't have a clue lol. I really would like to play a dragonborn monk, BUT the variant human with a metaphorical take on "golden dragon" makes total sense. The lore of Fizban always surrounded by a group of yellow canaries that are polymorphed golden dragons really piqued my interest and I wanted to see how I could wrap that into the mix. To be honest, I'm not overly impressed with the way of the ascendant dragon? I was planning on going way of the open hand. The majority of the campaign would be trying to figure out who the heck that old man was, and why the heck he turned the character into a dragonborn monk. That's a lot to unravel when your life has been so far traveling only on one path.
I hope all of that makes sense! I'm intrigued on dialing back the background though. Using a variant human with the magic initiate feat would prbly be where I'd go, with some sort of draconic gift.
I'd also ask wether you want to play a dragonborn because you like the flavor and the mechanics or just because you like the flavor? If you don't really care about the breath weapons, consider playing a Custom Origin flavored to look like a dragonborn (or half-dragon or whatever you'd like) and taking the Magic Initiate feat at the start.
How much of this have you discussed with your DM?

If you wanna play as a gold Dragonborn Monk, then do that. But Dragonborn are not dragons.
