Campaign Idea: An adventure in which the players are asked by a mysterious benefactor to retrieve a series of artifacts from “evil” entities holding them across the land. Little do they know, these are innocent people, and the party is actually stealing from enemies of the benefactor. Each time they retrieve an artifact, the benefactor who hired them becomes more demanding and encourages the party to work faster to retrieve the rest of the items. Upon bringing the last one back, the benefactor laughs maliciously, and a shadowy figure exits them. It turns out that the benefactor was a regular mortal possessed by a power hungry demon who wishes to return to the Material Plane, and the artifacts the party retrieved helped them do that.
Monster Idea: A slime-like monster that hardens upon impact and becomes immune to all physical damage if the to hit dice roll exceeds its AC.
NPC Idea: A devil who offers you permanent buffs or abilities in exchange for a small part of your life force (hit points). For example, you could gain the ability to grow birdlike or draconic wings (your choice) from your back at will in exchange for 10 hit points, which you can never recover by any means short of a wish spell.
Puzzle Idea: The party walks into a room. The room is empty of anything except for four statues that are each in the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and a pillar in the center. On the pillar is inscribed “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” By looking around, the party can see that the four statues resemble a handsome male human, a beautiful female elf, a burly and good looking male dwarf, and an ugly beholder that seems to have a small spherical indent in its eye. Upon reading the message inscribed on the pillar out loud, a small tile on it moves to the side, revealing a small golden orb with the word “beauty” etched into it.To solve the puzzle, the party must place the orb in the indent in the beholder’s eye. Doing so will cause the eye to slide to the side, revealing a platinum plated chest. Inside the chest rests a Ring of Three WIshes. (Note: the beholder statue is unaffected by magic, which prevents the party from just blowing the statue up or any else of the sort.) (If they put they eye in the wrong spot or attempt to destroy the statues, they come to life (using the animated armor stat block) except the beholder statue (unless they are level 17 or higher, in which case the beholder comes alive as well, using the beholder stat block))
Monster Idea: A small bug-like aberration that always goes after the strongest member of the party. It will attempt to bite that person, and if it does, it gains control over the person’s mind and latches onto their body. It will only release control of them if it is physically ripped off. (DM gets to play as that character when it's attached and keeps the monster’s initiative)
NPC Idea: A tavern keeper who will spike the party’s drinks and food in an attempt to drug them to sleep, and will then steal their things. That’s it.
Item Idea: Plot Armor. (Artifact) This magical plate grants you the ability to never die and always overcome your enemy, no matter how bleak things may look. However, this armor is also cursed. As soon as you don it, the people that are closest to you (emotionally) begin to die off, one by one, each one suffering a fate more horrible than the last. This includes fellow party members, family, and friends. (You can’t doff it or damage it in any way; not even a wish spell can affect it)
Spell Idea: Dismantling Ray. (5th level, Transmutation) When you cast this spell, a blast of pure destructive energy shoots from your hand, immediately dismantling any object it touches within a 30 foot cone. However, it does not affect any creatures caught in the area. For example, a building touched by this spell begins to fall apart and collapse, a sword begins to crack and shatter, et cetera. If this spell is used on a magic item, the caster must roll a d20. On a roll equal or greater than a DC determined by the item’s rarity, the item is dismantled peacefully. On a roll lower than the DC, the item explodes, dealing 9d6 force damage to any creature within a 30-foot-radius sphere.

Item Idea: Transformation Stone. (Rare item) You can use this arcanely enhanced stone to change the property of an item of very rare rarity or lower. Roll a d100; whatever the outcome is changes the item properties according to that outcome. For example, the stone could cause your item to randomly sprout fur whenever it is used, or if it is a weapon, it could change the damage type to a different type. You can only use this stone once per day, and you cannot use it on the same item two days in a row.
Spell Idea: Manual Breathing. (4th level, Enchantment, concentration) When you cast this spell on a creature, they must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or lose the ability to breathe automatically, and as thus must spend their next minute doing nothing but attempting to breathe. At the end of each turn, the creature can make another saving throw, ending the condition on a success. A creature that does not need to breathe is not affected by this spell.

Yo, I'm Himy (He/him) not as active as I use to be, but I'm here from time to time. I don't got much else to say.
"From the stars of the inner sea, from the tower of insight, from the four corners of paradise, let them know; their story is filled with blessings. Only those free of sin may pass... Garden of Avalon!”
”The elements coalesce, amalgamate, and bring forth the star that interweaves all creation. Bow down with death! Enuma Elish!”
Yo, what's good y'all, it's Shiver (again), back with another thread idea lmao. I'm much more likely to make this one compared to my last idea, I just wanna see if anybody's got any suggestions to adapt or improve it and whether or not anybody would considering joining. I ain't gotta name for it yet so imma just put all the details in the quote below.
This thread is set in a wild and wacky world, where the notes of creation thrum louder than other realms, and the narrative of life is free to be twisted and warped by whoever chooses to do so. What makes this world special however, is that since the powers of creation are so much more tangible and malleable, every person has a mastery and connection to one concept, item or just general thing from birth. This gives them control over this thing, and they can gain a menagerie of powers surrounding this item, with seemingly infinite potential. Some choose to leave their connection be, and not develop it, but most pursue real, complete control over their destined item and seeking higher echelons of achievement.
This thread is an open-world sandbox, which means it isn't constrained to the small setting of a tavern, or the railroad narrative of a story thread. Instead, the world is your character's oyster, and they are free to do whatever they choose. Also, with the general theme being freedom and creativity, there are lots of 'toon force' elements present, meaning your character can minorly twist the world and themselves in ways of their choosing. Another thing is that this thread is not meant to be serious whatsoever, it's meant to be purely wacky, fun and expansive (though this does not mean it won't create a detailed, satisfying and enjoyable thread, since some people think that something can't be cool or impressive without being serious) So, your characters are basically free to run wild and rampant with their powers, and there is little point in creating dark, edgy or serious characters when this world actively discourages it.
My main inspirations for this were the random, colourful worldbuilding and diverse, creative powers from shows like One Piece and Adventure Time, but also games like Cuphead, with it obviously having the old, cartoony logic, and random, goofy powers fitting in with the vibrant aesthetic! And of course, you can probably tell if you know me, but it also takes inspiration from my previous projects, ideas and threads, with my love of giving characters unique powers very clearly present lmao
Please let me know what you think, like if there's any improvements, clarifications, or ideas you want added, and if you'd consider joining!

so a baby could have the concept of void and just destroy us all at any second?

I mean...potentially? There are literally billions of items and concepts a person could have, so getting one that's purely destructive is unlikely. Also, a character's capabilities scale with age, experience and training. A baby born with control over voids wouldn't be able to destroy everything, instead they could maybe conjure minor vacuums and inflict darkness upon areas before they learn to get more abilities and advance their mastery. Therefore it isn't as simple as 'baby gets void, kills everyone' it'd more be like 'baby gets the potential to kill everyone with enough time and dedication.' It could be interesting to see whether they are trained by somebody noble and learn to harness their abilities in a way for good, or grow to be evil and lash out with their powers, even though they're the only thing that allows them to achieve such strength in the first place.

at least there are some safeguards in that aspect.

Imo, you should never tell your players not to play a specific kind of character. If they want to have a dark or edgy character, let them. From what I’m reading (and media I’ve consumed) there is plenty of room and reason for a darker character. Heck, I had an idea for a thread with a similar power system, and it was going to go way on the darker side. Pretty much, if you want to have a free thread, don’t force people into a certain character type

In most cases I'd definitely agree with you since it should be up to the player to decide their character, not the GM, but for this scenario, I'm encouraging non-serious characters more as I'm trying to show how the thread is going to be a specific setting, mood and tone, and a dark and edgy character will not work well in it. I didn't say somebody couldn't play one, all I'm saying is that there's little point in doing so as because of the nature of the thread and the rest of the cast, when you play in the thread, you're not going to be able to make that character work and shine as much as you might hope, which will potentially leave the player disappointed unless they plan, structure and write the character well. If somebody goes into the thread wanting to make a darker character and is aware that they're gonna have to work for them to fit into the setting and does so effectively, that's absolutely great and I'd be super chuffed to see someone put so much dedication into making something work, but for the most part, this thread is going to cater towards larger-than-life, goofy, carefree characters sooo much more than serious ones. Even though it's a sandbox thread, that doesn't mean any character is on the table. The characters are free to do what they want, but they've gotta fit the thread in the first place, y'know? Think of it like a regular DND campaign: In Curse of Strahd, a party consisting of Blibo the Gnome Jelly Juggler, A-382, an android bounty hunter from the far future, and Celene the regular girl from the 21st century is going to be much harder to run than a party of characters that fit the story and setting. With enough work and effort from both the GM and players, maybe something outlandish like that could work in that scenario, but that's not what I'm looking to do at all.

I agree with you on the first point, but that analogy doesn’t work here. If this is a sandbox thread, there is no DM. It’s not a campaign, it’s a thread, and there is a big difference between the two. Plus, a majority of the people here are decent writers, if not amazing, so making it work isn’t really too hard. And since there is no DM, you don’t have to do anything. Again. Don’ limit the player’s choices.

Most of these are stollen from YouTube
Yes, yes, I know. But I just wanted to do them for fun and to see what they would look like if I actually homebrewed them.

Sorry, I think I’ve confused you when I said sandbox: By that I mean the players can choose what to do within the story, go anywhere they like, try whatever they want, but that doesn’t mean the thread is just gonna get left for the players to decide what happens by themselves. As the thread creator I’ll act as a GM to provide the final say on rulings, answer any questions the players might have, decide on the lore, history and most importantly in this context, the themes of the thread’s setting, along with other things, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be planning and leading a story as you’d expect in a campaign or story thread. I know that the people here can be some incredible and talented writers, but there isn’t a challenge on ‘who can create a character that works in a setting not suited for them’. Nobody needs to make serious characters, and so even though I’m sure most players could be capable of doing so, they’re gonna get so much more out of the thread by going with the themes and mood set out rather than trying to fight against it. And please can you stop telling me to ‘stop limiting player choices’. Never have I once said that they absolutely cannot play a serious character, all I’ve done is advised strongly against it because there is very little point in doing so and it is not what the thread is looking for; if you’re desperate to play a serious character, I can’t see why you can’t just play it in another thread which isn’t one that directly is looking for non-serious characters.
I apologise about my analogy, it was pretty poor though it was all I could come up with on the fly; a better one would be somebody making a thread dedicated to fairies, where all the characters are fairies and you’ll struggle to play anything else, and then somebody being desperate to play a giant. It just goes against what the thread is looking for and won’t work well without some serious planning.

Telling someone not to play a specific character is kinda limiting player choices, but I’m just gonna stop arguing about it because I know you aren’t changing your stance on it. And if you’re going to have a discussion, there’s no need to get so upset and defensive over it. That’s all I’ll say

Yeah, I’m not gonna change my mind and was actually going to back down too because of that, so thanks for backing down first as that saves us both time. Also I’d agree I was defensive of my point (not sure what else I was meant to do since I was asking for criticism and then was responding and combatting that, i.e defence) but I was far from upset dude, idk how you were reading my responses but you were definitely misinterpreting them regardless, so please don’t tell me how to have a discussion, thanks.

How do y'all like these homebrew ideas?
Upon reading the message inscribed on the pillar out loud, a small tile on it moves to the side, revealing a small golden orb with the word “beauty” etched into it. To solve the puzzle, the party must place the orb in the indent in the beholder’s eye.

You know when someone backs down you aren’t supposed to keep going
