Hey y'all. It's March, and people really like tournaments around this time for some reason. So I figured I'd make a fun little event in the form of a Level 20 bracket of bloodshed. Various characters will fight, the strongest move on to the next tier, and on and on until we have a winner!
"But Gibber the Sane", I hear you asking, "What's the prize for such a significant accomplishment?" And to that I say, uhhhh... Glory! Yeah! Let's go with that, surely worth more then anything else you could receive. You'll be given the honor to put a trophy in your signature that you prevailed.
As the title says, this is still a work in progress. I just figured it would be a good idea to start this kind of thing in advance so that people could sign up while things are getting prepared. In the meantime, people can get planning their builds! Here's what the rules are so far:
5e rules. That meaning the 2014 rules, NOT the 5.5 ones.
Level 20 for maximum anarchy. Rerolling ones is applied. Any source is allowed besides homebrew for obvious reasons, and Unearthed Arcana has to be reviewed. Only spells that are banned are the creative application of Wish and spells that let you teleport away to stall things out, although banned material is subject to change. Any of the methods for stats (point buy, rolling and standard array) are fine, just roll any stats in here if you're gonna. Feat backgrounds are allowed, and you gain equipment only from starting or requesting. Firearms are allowed if you can get them.
If you don't know how tournaments work, I'm surprised you don't but how it works is that you have a bunch of people join in. Those people fight, 2 for each duel. Then the winners of those fights go to fight other winners in basically the same process but with a smaller pool of candidates. This continues on and on until you have one final contestant on each side, they fight and the winner of that gets all the glory. If you're still confused, just look up "Tournament Bracket explanation" or something like that on Google.
The arena and environment will NOT be the same every round, that'd be boring. A variety of maps will be made and rolled for randomly right before the fight begins. They will have different effects and hazards, so it's rare for a fight to be the same layout. It's recommended to be ready for anything, although you'll always start 30 feet away from each other.
No magic items to start out with, but an emphasis on to start out. You can request them in advance (anything but artifacts) and they will drop at a random point in time and at a random point in the arena. It will always be at a point between you and your opponent, as whoever gets it first can use it. (For this purpose, it can't be anything with a limit that keeps your opponent from using it, such as specific class requirements or it simply being an item your opponent wouldn't be able to use effectively). Magic items will be attuned to automatically by whoever reaches them first, and items like armor take only one turn to equip.Additionally, similar drops will happen with things like potions of healing and other buffs.
No setup round to prevent casters from gaining an advantage.
You don't have to share your character sheet until the match begins or if a Gamemaster requests to see it, and you can make changes in-between rounds to keep people on their toes or just to rework your strategy.
Just have general forum etiquette. Be nice, censor swears, cut quote chains and such.
Gamemasters/Mods: TheMadGibber (me), Tenbay. If you aren't planning on participating in the fights, feel free to apply to be a Gamemaster. They make the maps and overall create the rules for the game. If you don't feel like doing that either, though, that's fine. Just sit back and watch the chaos.
Participants (I'll make the bracket when it's all ready):
Cynophobia as [Currently characterless]
Redpelt as [Currently characterless]
Dreami_Noodle as Wolmae
Carsorino as [Currently characterless]
tarrasque2846 as Quarts

Arenas (Complete after maps are made for some of them):
Colosseum (Default Arena). Nothing special, the most boring option but it exists. 60 by 60 feet square.
Abandoned Cove. Every 2 rounds, the tide rises or sinks. This doesn't sound that bad at first, until you realize the water is filled with HUNGRY PIRANHAS MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. At the start of their turn, any creature that is in the water takes 6d6 of piercing as the little guys bite at the contestants' ankles. There are bridges above that you can climb up to with a ladder, but each plank has only 15 health before breaking. A more reliable option is small mini-islands that don't get submerged at any time, but they are, as mentioned before, rather small (probably like 15 by 15 feet at most).
Additionally, magic items are stolen by the piranhas when they haven't been taken by contestants yet. (For this purpose, they will always be dropped when the tide sinks.)
I Believe I Can Fly. Makeshift wings are attached to the contestant's backs, giving them a flying speed equal to their walking speed (unless if they already have one). They then are placed in an endless sky with no boundaries or limits.
Tower's Peak. The tower is 100 feet wide/long and very, very high up (200 feet specifically). Whenever you deal damage on an attack or instantaneous spell, you can choose to do knockback with an amount of feet equal to the amount of damage done (knockback meaning away from you, and it can't be into the ground or upward). Any creature that falls off the tower has one turn to make it back up, otherwise instantly taking the 20d6 fall damage and being teleported back up.
Engine Powered Steamboat. There is an engine with 100 hit points keeping the ship afloat. One contestant will be given the goal to destroy it to win, while the other will always respawn 2 rounds after being killed and be given the goal to kill the attacker before they can destroy the engine. (In the event of a tie in ranking, it will be determined randomly.)
Forest. Unless if the contestants are within 5 feet of each other, they both have advantage on stealth checks as they can easily hide behind trees. (I thought I had posted this before tbh)
Desert- This desert is extremely hot, as it is a desert. At each corner of the map are pools of water that contestants can use a bonus action to drink from. Otherwise, they gain 1 level of exhaustion for every 2 rounds they don't drink, with water removing 1 level each time it's drank.
Additionally, when magic items spawn there will be 2 of them. However, only one of them will be real and the other one is a mirage. A DC 15 Perception or Insight check can be made to determine which one is real.
Pure Darkness. Kinda a more hardcore forest. Contestants can only see within 15 feet of them unless if they have something besides darkvision to light things up, and their movements are posted in spoilers when they aren't able to be seen by their opponent (using the honor system here, if you want to be really secret you can just PM).
Wizard War Aftermath- It is quite literally raining fireballs here. There's cover here and there, but if you can't get to it in time then things will be rough. Any creature that starts its turn without cover automatically is hit by a fireball without a Dex Save that ignores resistance and is only halved by immunity.
The Floor Is Lava. Like Seriously You Don't Want To Fall Because It Is Not Fake Lava It Will Very Much Hurt Because It Is Real Molten Lava- When a tile is stood on, 1 round after it will collapse and fall into the lava. It will not be replaced, so contestants have to maneuver around more and more as the game goes on. For this map in particular, tiles are 10 feet wide and therefore can be shared by two creatures, but obviously you can try to push each other off and it'll collapse after that either way. Falling into the lava deals 10d6 fire damage that ignores resistance and is only halved by immunity.
Don't Look Behind You...- There is a boulder that rolls and chases down the contestants. Being crushed by the boulder is an instant loss, and the only way to not get crushed by it is to run down an infinite hallway until the match is over. The bolder has a speed of 30 feet and starts 60 feet away from the contestants.
That's it (well, not really it, since again work in progress, but for now that's it)! Let the games begin... :)
You have no idea what sort of demented, 150 DPR door you're opening here Gibber...
On another thought, maybe there should be preliminaries! To rank people! And then 'betting!' (I know we wouldn't actually bet but we could try guessing who would win)
Also, could you maybe only ban the creative application of Wish? I think that might be better.

Also, we can only request items that don’t have class requirements in the attunement section, or do you mean items that are useable for our class (as in, im a fighter vs a wizard and i request a sword) - Are feat backgrounds allowed? - Is the starting distance going to always be the same/at least mildly fair? Anything more than 30 ft screws over martials - Firearms are allowed? - Starting equipment only or do we get to pick?

Also banning setup rounds would be nice. Having any at all would just make any caster at a full advantage

-Yeah.
-Regular equipment isn't dropped, you just can get it with the gold or equipment your character would regularly get. In the case of magic items, tho, that is a good question. I'd assume magic items instantly get attuned cause the match isn't going to last forever (unless someone uses a teleportation spell to go out and wait until the other contestant dies of boredom, I might ban those or at least add a limit to them tbh). You bring up a good point on the equipping and requests as well. For equipping, probably instant or using only one turn? Not sure, tho. For requests, probably usable by both of you (class requirements don't matter if both of you are the same class, obviously, or the magic item works for both of your classes).
-Sure. I'm hoping I don't open a 300 DPR door instead of 150 with this, since I don't know feats that well tbh, but I'll allow it.
-Yeah.
-Yeah, so long as you get them regularly or request them.
-Starting equipment only, you can spend gold if you choose that tho.
-Will do.
Will add all this stuff. I made this like right before I went to bed so I really appreciate all the help making it better.
Edit: Also changing the name from (IN PROGRESS) to (IN DEVELOPMENT) because in progress makes it sound like it's already started.
Edit 2: Also, Platyboss are you participating? I'm assuming Drizzt isn't since they're betting but not sure if you are or not.
