To start, I am freshly new to DND Beyond. I am making a few subclasses for my party, all first timers including me. As the dm I am making a Golgari paladin as the BBEG that will grow along side my table. In need help with writing the code snippets for DNDB. The current idea is a feat I call Undergrowth, Once per turn in combat you can add +1 to your ac for that round in combat, it will be reset on your next turn, kinda like MTG. This can be done 5 times without an issue. But each time you use it you gain a counter. At the end of your five counters you can temporarily subtract 5 from your permeant ac; plus 1 hp per counter until the end of the battle. You can also continue to add that +1 to your ac every turn after the initial 5 counters; but instead of losing an ac and hp, you lose 2 hp +[1 or 2] hp per level. But every counter after 6 or 7 the lost hp is multiplied by 2. This is of course the beta of the feat and will be tweaked before I publish so its not too op. I uploaded this idea to r/DND on reddit but reddit is reddit and I was told to scrap the idea for being insane. Hopefully I find help here. If my writing is confusing please let me know, I was never really good at grammar. I also hope I am posting in the right place.
You should post this in the homebrew section for help with coding.
The idea is a bit odd. Most combats last 3-4 rounds. The counters will very rarely hit their maximin, so you’re basically giving them an AC bump for free.
Snippets don’t actually “do” anything, they just present the calculated static totals. They cannot be used to track anything anywhere near as complicated as all of that. And that is very complicated for D&D. Why not simplify it so that you can get a +1 AC for 1 round 1ce/short rest? That would be far more inline with how D&D is designed.
Im not a big fan of "counter" type abilities in 5e because it feels more like a videogame mechanic where you are building up stacks. Such an ability can work pretty well in a videogame, but I am afraid that along with their other resources it might become tedious to keep track of since it varies up and down throughout combat. To expand on what Sposta has already pointed out, it would be a bit unconventional for 5e's current design, where most pools of resources (whether they be ki, spell slots, lay on hands, etc) start at some "full" value and slowly decrease throughout the day.
Thats not to say your ability or ideas cant work in some capacity. I dont want to sound dismissive, but if you are all first-timers it may be a good idea not to immediately jump into homebrew stuff until you have had a chance to play a few sessions of the game.
