I was watching an online stream about the best magic items. The ring of spell storing came up.
I hadn't thought of using it this way. They said in their exposition that another caster can "fill" the ring and then give it to you, and you are able to cast the spells for yourself. So if I am a bard, for example, and another caster places the third level spell, Fireball, into the ring, I can cast fireball if my character is wearing the ring. Is this correct?
If it is so, it seems to be a workaround for almost any use of a spell that isn't on your class' spell list.
I had thought the caster filled the ring of spell storing themselves ahead of going on an adventure.

The fireball DC is that of wizard who casted into the ring. It is a small work around but it is not much of one. Once you cast the fireball from the ring, it is gone. And yes you can prefilled before you leave. Or during the adventure, my group fills them before a long rest, if they have any spell slots left.
Filling them before a long rest is exactly what I would expect to do during a "dungeon crawl."
But I have read and participated in threads where folks express strong opinions about whether a spell could be used by another class of spell caster. This opens up a big opportunity to set aside spell list limits. For example, now any spell caster could use Find Greater Steed if they have a paladin in their group and a ring of spell storing. As a bard, there are spells I would like to use once, but I would never use a slot in magical secrets to pick up that spell. With a ring of spell storing, much of that can be accommodated.

With a Ring of Spell Storing, any creature can cast any spell stored within the ring, no need to be a spellcaster at all. Give the ring with Swift Quiver stuffed into it to the party’s Sharpshooter Battle Master and at 20th level they can pump out 6 devastating shots per turn. If the ring can be used by anyone, why couldn’t a Bard use it to cast a Wizard or Paladin spell?
I had thought the caster filled the ring of spell storing themselves ahead of going on an adventure.
That is probably the more common use of it. My Sorcerer player desperately wants one and I am sure it is for this reason. I allow him to change 1 spell per long rest (instead of per level as in RAW) and I am sure what he wants to do is cast a bunch of useful spell X into the ring right before resting, and then change that spell to even-more-useful spell Y, so he has access to both.
I'm sure he'd also be happy to have the cleric cast some stuff into it for him to use later too... but I am 100% that he would never, except in the most extreme dire life-or-death-no-other-choice circumstance, give that ring to someone else, if he had it (which right now, he does not). His goal is to cast more spells himself, not to let other people cast spells.
But yes, if he wanted to cast fireball into it and hand it to the ranger, he could, and she could cast it. (And it would arguably be a much better tactical use of the ring than what he wants it for, which is to just be able to cast more of his own spells.)

Heck, if I was a spellcaster with one of those I would be looking at everyone else’s spell lists to see them hat I could ask them to toss my way. Being able to cast your own spells is cool, but you can already do that. Being able to cast other people’s spells is cooler because it’s something you couldn’t do before.
But honestly, if you can load the Fighter or Monk or even Rogue up (sorry Barbs) up with stuff to make them even better at what they do, why not? Everyone knows that Monks are the zippy ones that get stuck in and stun a bunch of people. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they had Spirit Guardians with them? A Sharpshooter Battlemaster with a Longbow is basically a howitzer, let them be even better at that with Flame Arrows, Hunter’s Mark, or Swift Quiver. IMO, those are the characters who can best benefit from a RoSS.

I mean sure, but at what point does this become ultimately self-defeating. Either you make these guys so good that any challenge the DM puts in front of you gets wiped, or else the DM has to ramp up the challenge to negate the buff. Neither of these is a desirable outcome, IMO.
The guy who plays the sorcerer in my game and wants the Ring of Spell Storing so he can "be more awesome" and do more stuff... is the #1 person to say he wants "more of a challenge" in the game. So he somehow wants to both be overpowered and challenged at the same time. This is simply not possible. Either you're overpowered, in which case by definition there is no challenge (or little challenge) or you are appropriately powered, and there is a challenge. You cannot have both.

The only problem with giving this item to a "fighter" type or something that has these sorts of abilities is that using the ring is an action. So all those multi attacks don't get used when you try to let a fighter also be a spell caster. So my feeling is leave it with the full casters and not the others that are most likely swinging their swords.
For my part, I plan to have the Sorc or the Cleric load a few spells into it so I might be able to double up an attack in one round, such as the lightning bolts our Sorc is able to throw around. He casts one and I cast one during the same round. Spirit guardians from our Cleric would also be sweet.

Not true. Using the Ring of Spell Storing to cast a spell uses the [Tooltip Not Found] action which means if you put a Bonus Action spell inside it - it takes a Bonus Action to cast.
So a Fighter with a Ring of Spell Storing and say Hunter's Mark or Swift Quiver - they can cast that and then use their Attack action.
Activating an Item (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#ActivatinganItem) Activating some magic items requires a user to do something special, such as holding the item and uttering a command word. The description of each item category or individual item details how an item is activated. Certain items use the following rules for their activation.
If an item requires an action to activate, that action isn't a function of the Use an Object action, so a feature such as the rogue's Fast Hands can't be used to activate the item.
Spells Some magic items allow the user to cast a spell from the item. The spell is cast at the lowest possible spell level, doesn't expend any of the user's spell slots, and requires no components, unless the item's description says otherwise. The spell uses its normal casting time, range, and duration, and the user of the item must concentrate if the spell requires concentration.
True - but that's what is so good about the item. It's so easy to tailor the spells you put in the ring that literally anybody can make excellent use of it in the right circumstances.
Any excuse I have to dial up the lethality is alright in my book. (Gotta add more notches to my DM Screen. 😉) Kidding, but also not. I never try to intentionally kill a PC, but I do try to make sure the players feel like the PCs got their brains stomped in every time I run a combat heavy day. If they don’t finish the day feeling relieved their characters actually survived then I feel like I didn’t give them their nickel’s worth.

What's the ruling you use on concentration spells? Could your sorcerer put one cast of Animate objects into the ring on Monday, take a long rest and then Tuesday cast his own animate objects (using spell slots) and then cast the stored animate objects using the ring on his next turn?
There are a few OP combos that I can think of using 5th level or lower spells that a Sorcerer could pull off if they don't have to worry about the concentration of the stored spell.
I suppose if you say that the Sorcerer can't do what I described above, they could just do the exact same thing but give the ring to another party member the night before the battle and then they cast the additional concentration spell. I assume then that you would want both party members to maintain separate concentration.

Already answered in my reply #10. Very last sentence of the rule quote. Basically - even when casting a spell from an object - you must concentrate on the spell from it. So you can't use it to have two concentration spells up. Casting one breaks the other.

Yes - both players would need to concentrate on their own respective casting of the spell.

You don't need to cast it while raging. You don't even need to cast it while in combat. No concentration and an hour duration, 2 if a sorlock casts it using extended spell metamagic and the DM rules that the cast from the ring uses that as the basis for the cast from the ring. There is some difficulty casting AoA and raging in the same turn if you haven't taken damage or attacked since your last turn, which puts more onus on precasting.

I think Find Greater Steed and Find Familiar probably the most effective things to pass around to non-Paladins and non-Wizards. They last indefinitely and the ring can be filled with something else, ready to be used again. If you have a tenday of downtime, I think this is one of the best uses. Everyone can have a flying mount and a free Help action in combat!
