I am currently playing a battlemaster/genie warlock multiclass with polearm master, slasher and crusher (dao genie warlock). I have 15 charisma and 20 Strength. I am not sure what i should take for my next lvl up. Warlock doesn't seem to offer much without much charisma, but on the other hand battlemaster fighter only gives me no real benefit until lvl 11 (extra attack). Is there any good path with warlock or another class, or should I stick with fighter?
The nice thing about Warlock is how customizable it is. Right at level 2 you get your first 2 Eldritch Invocations... each Invocation kind of replaces your level-up features. So if you take your next level in Fighter, you get Indomitable, which is one of those features that is nice to have, but it's not something you can rely on regularly. Whereas if you take your next level in Warlock, you can have any feature you want out of the ones you qualify for. One of the classic comboes for Melee-focused characters will require an additional investment from you to take Warlock to 3rd level so you can get 2nd level spells, but you could take Devil's Sight and then cast Darkness on yourself... now you radiate darkness that even creatures with darkvision can't see through, and suddenly you can't be targeted by a ton of magic plus you have advantage on basically all attacks, all attacks have disadvantage against you, and you don't really have to worry about attacks of opportunity, since they need to be able to see you in the first place to attempt one. It's a tactic you don't want to use every single combat, not just to avoid pissing off your DM, but also so that your allies won't be blinded by a 30 foot wide sphere of impenetrable darkness blocking their view constantly.
The other nice thing you could get at 3rd level is Pact of the Chain. With that, you could take a Sprite or an Imp as a familiar, since they can just turn invisible at will, and you can have them give you the help action turn-after-turn to give you advantage on one attack per round. Eventually your DM will probably wipe them out with an AOE attack or something, but in general a little invisible guy that isn't actually doing damage will get ignored by most enemies, so it's fairly safe to put them in harm's way for your own sake.
The problem with darkness is, that i will have massive problems with positioning, since i will be impairing the vision of my allies as well. Pact of the chain seems pretty weak to be honest. The familiar will only survive one or two attacks at this level and we have a druid who is abusing conjure animals to give us advantage. We will also probably be facing a lot of casters who can simply use one spell slot to to dispel darkness. As for the attacks of opportunity I can push myself free off most melees with the crusher feat.
I also could get the darkness stuff with only one lvl of shadow sorcerer + more spell slots and cantrips (not that i really need more cantrips anyways)
Honestly, it sounds like you're probably better off just sticking with Fighter to get all the benefits that come with that. I would still recommend looking at the Eldritch Invocations and see if any of them inspire a strategy or if you feel like one of them could solve a problem that you regularly struggle against.
Take a second level in Warlock, Eldritch Invocations are the shiznit.
I’ll second this. There’s a lot of utility in the invocations outside of combat that can help round you out. Unlimited casting of things like speak with animals or disguise self, being able to read all writing. Many others. Not to mention a second spell slot and another spell.
But the other thing to consider is how high will the campaign go, level-wise? Then you can see what you’re closing yourself off from. That might help you decide.
i guess, we will get 3-4 level ups. We already have several characters with speak with animals and one warlock with the language invocation
Then pick different invocations. There are plenty and almost all of them are useful. You could detect magic at will, cast disguise self or silent image or false life at will, boost your eldritch blast in various ways (if you have it), gain proficiency in some social skills, or be able to see through magical and nonmagical darkness or through another creature’s senses. Any of that could be useful.
No, you cannot get at-will casting of 1st-level spells from any caster. You cannot get boosts to eldritch blast from any caster. You cannot get the ability to see through magical darkness from any caster. You can only get them from Eldritch Invocations. Period.
If none of that stuff interests you then do whatever you want. You asked for people’s suggestions, I gave you mine. Do with it what you will.
Literally everything is situational. But certainly, you know your campaign better than we do. Maybe you’re very combat heavy, and disguise self won’t come up. The point is more, there’s lots of options, there’s bound to be a couple you’ll get some use from, and a second spell slot/short rest + spell is nothing to sneeze at.
But, hey, maybe just stick with fighter. That kind of seems like what you want to do, and that 3rd attack at 11, will be pretty sweet. To my mind that’s what you really need to weigh, is the utility you can get from warlock worth delaying your 3rd attack? That’s going to be a personal preference choice.
I don't know what all the above are talking about. More warlock levels are only going to give you a bit of utility which is going to be redundant if you have any competent Arcane caster in your party.
The obvious way to go is Barbarian-3 for Bear Totem, that almost universal resistance will be more useful than Indomitable, and Reckless gives you guaranteed advantage on demand, plus Rage gives you another +2 damage to each of your attacks.
