Death Throes. When the balor dies, it explodes, and each creature within 30 feet of it must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 70 (20d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The explosion ignites flammable objects in that area that aren’t being worn or carried, and it destroys the balor’s weapons.
Fire Aura. At the start of each of the balor’s turns, each creature within 5 feet of it takes 10 (3d6) fire damage, and flammable objects in the aura that aren’t being worn or carried ignite. A creature that touches the balor or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 10 (3d6) fire damage.
Magic Resistance. The balor has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Magic Weapons. The balor’s weapon attacks are magical.
Multiattack. The balor makes two attacks: one with its longsword and one with its whip.
Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) slashing damage plus 13 (3d8) lightning damage. If the balor scores a critical hit, it rolls damage dice three times, instead of twice.
Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 30 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d6 + 8) slashing damage plus 10 (3d6) fire damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 25 feet toward the balor.
Teleport. The balor magically teleports, along with any equipment it is wearing or carrying, up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.
If this was the case, a smart DM would make the weapon useable after the master has been killed.
A brilliant DM would make it usable and make the item cursed!
YES
Yes, it does. It says "it destroys the balor’s weapons." Period. It doesn't matter how far away they are or anything.
That's brilliant! Would be a nice way to balance gaining a strong weapon and probabl a coupe tries to remove the curse. What would the curse be though? Physical damage or perhaps trying to corrupt its user?
Corrupt the user definitely, and if they refuse the weapon (Refuse to follow its wishes), they either cant gain healing from spells (Baphomet curse) or a reduction (1d8) to their highest stat effectively crippling a barbarian or bard, or even a rogue with reliable talent. It is a Demon's weapon afterall
True, but I do not know if anything that major. Admittingly, I am not well-versed in cursed weapons, but I think that may be a tad extreme. Especially since I imagine the actual disarming happens so few times to warrant such a major contingency.
this just looks like a weak sauce, hairy cousin to the balrog from lord of the rings
also note that the weapons are absolute units of equipment, so it would probably take a trip to a very strong mage to shrink them down to a reasonable size for even a jacked barbarian to use. I'd say at minimum disadvantage on all attacks while its still balor sized.
Balor be scary bro
Are the weapons themselves magical weapons the balor wields or they are manifested by the powers of the balor itself? If someone shapechanged into a balor might they get access to those weapons if they similar weapons on themselves?
Now let's say that the party has a level 18 rune knight in the party, side note but it would make a hella great trophy
Variant bonus action:
Evil Eye. The balor glares at a creature it can see within 30 ft. The creature must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or be frightened for 1d10 rounds (ends at the end of the balor's turn). While frightened in this manner, the creature gives off a faint scent of smoke.
The wip in the picture is made of fire so it will likely not get destroyed when the Baylor is killed(and burst into flames) so it makes perfect sense for the players to get it as a reward.
Who's picturing a scene of the death of a balor like Durin's Bane falling with the Bridge of Khazad-dum.
I'm surprised no one has said this in the comments, so I will say it now:
YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!!!!
DM note: If you are running this creature please give it Legendary Resistances. I used this bad boy as a finale boss and it was taken out in 2 rounds when one of the players casted Banishment that the creature failed the roll on. Poof BBEG.
Imagine if you will; The Balor using its teleport/ flight to fly in the air and use its whip dealing the afore mentioned 2d6+8 and 3d6 fire, but pulls it up to it and drops it to the ground dealing at least another 2d6 falling damage and it stays out of range of melee attackers, (20 INT should be terrifying)
ShapeChange 😈😈😈
NOOOOOO! GANDALF!!!!!
