Description

I don't have vary much experience but that does seem like a particularly deadly encounter, one rule I go by in the first few levels(especially level 1) is that no encounter should have more monsters than players, even more so if one of them is higher cr than the average party level, and about the fireball, another thing to look out for in the early levels is aoe attacks that can drop a player with max damage (I.e. 8d6 being 48)should be used with extreme caution, if you don't want to change the encounter too much, try nocking the damage of the fireball down to 4d6 to keep it from turning into a tpk.

Posted Jul 15, 2023A few tips: Back when I constantly made humanoid enemies from scratch, I would use rolled stats like you would when you were creating a character, mainly using Standard Array with a modified maximum score based on the CR I wanted. I'd then hand-select where those stats went in accordance with their role in society and personality. I'd take a lot of abilities that Fiends had and re-skin them so that they were achievable by a human being, because they're diverse and were made to play on that specific Fiend's personality (which can easily be translated into human personality, as screwed up as that is to think about). Also, Legendary Actions make for a surprisingly large power increase. Overall, homebrewing pretty much anything is really just a game of research and mustering up creativity for whatever isn't already made; it seems really hard if you don't know what you're creating from the get-go, but looking at a ridiculous amount of fantasy stuff eventually just gives you instant inspiration for what you want to create because you've already seen something similar. A genuine pastime of mine is just creating entire worlds from scratch in my head, because I've gotten so much inspiration over the years that any new thing immediately translates over to DnD campaign logic and I start scheming like a gremlin to make something out of it from sheer reflex. I've spent probably a cumulative 100 hours just on YouTube videos that tell you how to create proper worlds and characters, so it's kinda second nature now (I recommend Runesmith's videos for this, they're probably the best possible thing for homebrewing your own stuff).
I still feel like a complete idiot for not knowing about the Humanoid section for literal years lol
