Barbed Hide. At the start of each of its turns, the barbed devil deals 5 (1d10) piercing damage to any creature grappling it.
Devil's Sight. Magical darkness doesn't impede the devil's darkvision.
Magic Resistance. The devil has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Multiattack. The devil makes three melee attacks: one with its tail and two with its claws. Alternatively, it can use Hurl Flame twice.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage.
Hurl Flame. Ranged Spell Attack: +5 to hit, range 150 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (3d6) fire damage. If the target is a flammable object that isn't being worn or carried, it also catches fire.

how fun!
I gave them the ability to grapple if both claw attacks hit the same target, and made barbed hide apply to grappled targets as well.
this is going to be good, so good.
the “bladed weapons and knives sticking out of them from past battles” aesthetic is metal and brilliant for servants of Ares.

Posted Feb 8, 2023Why are there no low level devils that can cast spells in 5e?
In pathfinder every devil except the lemure devils can cast spells.
This sucks for me as I wanted to crew a spelljammer with devils, and now I have to find some sort of workaround.

Posted Jun 22, 2024Fifth edition tries to avoid giving out spell-like abilities when it can just be an ability (like the "Hurl-Flame" attack).
That being said, it would be completely reasonable to give Innate Spellcasting or levels in Sorcerer to a more experienced Barbed Devil. This statblock is just the monster's most basic form; they are also as immortals with plenty of time to gather power and refine their own infernal abilities. Who knows what other tricks they've picked up over the centuries?
