Barbed Hide. At the start of each of its turns, the barbed devil deals 5 (1d10) piercing damage to any creature grappling it.
Devil's Sight. Magical darkness doesn't impede the devil's darkvision.
Magic Resistance. The devil has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Multiattack. The devil makes three melee attacks: one with its tail and two with its claws. Alternatively, it can use Hurl Flame twice.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage.
Hurl Flame. Ranged Spell Attack: +5 to hit, range 150 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (3d6) fire damage. If the target is a flammable object that isn't being worn or carried, it also catches fire.

Posted Sep 26, 2020I like the design for these guys, it reminds of the murals in gothic cathedrals.
Lore-wise, they make the most sense to find in a dungeon, given their specialist role as guards, but they also work very well as generic mid-level fiends.
I just finished watching A J Picket’s video on them (a YT channel which I recommend), he has some suggestions on how to thematically make them more threatening. In summary, over the millennia of their existence they’d acquire items or class levels which let them cast Darkness (which they can see through), which limit movement (like Hold person, flaming sphere or even Wall of Fire), or inflict poison damage (even if it’s just basic poison applied to its claws). It would likely also use some bizarre monstrosity, or fiendish beast, as a “guard dog.”
I think these modifications are probably a little too much for the average summoned & bound guardian, but it makes perfect sense for one found at the center of a cult, or encountered on the lower planes (which victory & defeat hold more consequences for fiends).

Posted Sep 2, 2022Monster Manual.
If you scroll to the bottom of the entry, they list the book each monster id from. In this case it's s bit weird as it's part of the core rules DDB made free, "Basic Rules," but whenever you see that, you know it's part of the PHB, DMG, or MM, depending on the type of entry you're looking at.
