Description
Hill giants are selfish brutes that hunt and raid in constant search of food. Their skins are tan from lives spent beneath the sun, and their weapons are uprooted trees and rocks pulled from the earth.
Probably a least popular opinion but, these guys are favorite true giants next to Cloud giants. Perhaps with some homebrewing this can be a powerful foe (or foes).
There are more reasons why I like the hill giants, however none of them have to do with what's said by these weirdos above my comment.
It depends on how may players you have but generally a group of 3 players of 6th level can take on 1 with ease and 3 with difficulty.
GIve it some class levels and a couple minions.
I love how these guys are so dumb that they'd meet let's say a frost giant, watch him cut open the stomach of a white dragon with a swing of it's axe, entirely ignore that, and just think that guys like taller than me, so I should probably do what he says.
it can get really one sided if the party has either dead weight or a character that can easily solo 1-2 hill giants barbarians and save or suck casters in particular especially save or suck casters cus its saves are super low.
Um I am a dungeon master who has never used any type of giant. Could I use a hill giant for a level 4-6 party of four people?
( There is a Barbarian, Fighter, Wizard, and Bard).
I would say yes. The giant is fairly easy to hit and that 105 hp will go down fairly quickly versus that sort of group. Will depend on how the group play though.
I'm about to send 6 level 8s versus a village of hill giants. But then, I'm a mean DM. :o)
For an encounter with one hill giant and a 4-6 level party, I recommend giving it some legendary actions and resistances, or at least some save proficiencies.

Would this guy be too hard for a party of 3 level 3s with some pretty good magical items? The party usually fights smart and I don’t want to make it too easy.
They are alright as a mini-boss but they could just kill your party or get killed very quick
tbf Dragons and Giants where already enemies due to lore reasons so them eating the wyrmlings makes sense but at the same time its also probably due to their dimwitted nature.
just had a party of five lvl 4 adventurers fight two and it was a very tough (not too tough) if that helps
it was one of the first monsters i fought and my new character only level 7 has about the strength of this guy my character has 20 ac. when he rages he has 180 hp but its the damage that makes us more equal mine is 2d6+11 with two attack like him and our speed is the exact same and our strength is both +5 oh and we speak the same language
LOL
looks like my dad
same stats as him too
Attack on Titan is way scarier when you realize that everybody was basically facing these except they're entirely invulnerable save for a super specific spot on their neck and can only Grapple.
Side note: if you wanna do an AOT spinoff campaign/one-shot, this is the easiest possible monster to use in place of the Titans. Calculating all the differences takes like five seconds to do and even the very base is pretty lore-accurate as long as you only make it Grapple and play up the stupidity (obviously giving it infinite regen unless its nape is cut out is also important; I'd recommend giving it Troll regen but without the weaknesses to fire and acid). Can confirm from experience, using AOT inspiration makes for a great DnD setting.
