Death Burst. When the mephit dies, it explodes in a burst of jagged ice. Each creature within 5 feet of it must make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4 (1d8) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
False Appearance. While the mephit remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary shard of ice.
Innate Spellcasting (1/Day). The mephit can innately cast fog cloud, requiring no material components. Its innate spellcasting ability is Charisma.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 3 (1d4 + 1) slashing damage plus 2 (1d4) cold damage.
Frost Breath (Recharge 6). The mephit exhales a 15- foot cone of cold air. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, taking 5 (2d4) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Anyone else think these little guys are awesome little servants to your "Big Bad"? They have that perfect little "conniving" look, I think that they add a whole other element to your campaign bad guy.
i got to know
was the pun intended?
What pun?
"...I think that they add a whole other ELEMENT you your campaign bad guy."
I think that was the pun.
ha. ha ha ha ha.
nice
My question - when these guys explode, does the explosion damage the other ice mephits within range? My DM ruled no, but I'm thinking since it's slashing damage it should?

As I would rule that in my own campaign, Yes it would deal damage to other mephits in the area as the description says "Each Creature within 5 feet". To me, that includes allies and enemies alike, the only time this would not apply, would be if something was immune to slashing damage, such as ochre jelly.
Damage Immunities Cold

Emphasis added mainly because it seems a little off that exploding ice deals slashing damage and not cold damage. Physically I can understand why, but when you consider the explosion of Ice Knife (https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/ice-knife) then you would expect an explosion of something cold to deal cold damage.
RAW says slashing damage, but I can definitely see an argument for making it deal cold damage.
Makes sense to me; you can see ice knife as a sort of cold bomb effect vs. the rough shrapnel blast of the mephit, for which the temperature is secondary to the cutting.
And they can definitely set off a chain reaction if a wounded mephit gets caught up in the blast.
Interesting. A clever BBEG could send them to swarm an enemy, hit them all with an area of effect spell (eg, fireball) and do a bunch of extra slashing damage on the hero. Go exploding minions!
cool as ice
yea they are really cool for that but with summon minor elemental and a good animal handling check you can have an army of them
Xanithar's Guide caused me to throw three of these things at a 3-person level 1 party. XG's random encounter tables seem to deliver way overpowered random encounters, as these guys could have easily TPK'd my players.
my DM made them do both slashing and cold damage
Well I think they should do cold damage
Sexy!
Yes, of course, at least as written. Each creature means each creature, and slashing damage means slashing damage, and they are not immune to slashing damage.
Was just thinking the same.
