Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Adhesive (Object Form Only). The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.
False Appearance (Object Form Only). While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.
Grappler. The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the mimic is in object form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.

Posted Apr 2, 2023This is what I sent to Matt.
Latest on Tempest. Tempest has been feeding her baby mimic fish and rats. So far, litter box training has been abysmal at best🤢😔. She’s decided to name it Munch and she speaks to it constantly (much to its dismay). She keeps it locked in her room. It’s a good thing she’s not above lying because the cat population has decreased in the neighborhood🫣. Tempest has been seen calling for kitties in the alleys and she tells onlookers that she’s helping search for a neighbor’s lost kitty😉. Does she get the feeling that Munch can be trained to be a good pet/watch dog?She found it shaped like a box sitting on her desk in front of the window🤭 “here kitty kitty….

Posted May 16, 2023I think it would be the same in every form because it says 'it's stats stay the same', so I would assume so would it's general mass would stay the same as well

Posted May 27, 2023Since these guys are amorphous and have reasonable intelligence, they could join together to form one large mimic.

Posted Jun 14, 2023What do you think: A plasmoid who either is a warlock and takes the mask of many faces invocation, OR does the same with the eldritch initiate feat.
Mimic PC
Also, what if a mimic gets curious about humanoid life and impersonates a human by shapechanging into a VERY realistic mannequin with their own equipment? What if this mimic gets wrapped up in an adventuring party and has to maintain the illusion?
My one question is what kind of class and archetype they should take to better fit the mimic(s’) statistic(s). I’m currently thinking fighter with the unarmed fighting style. Possibly also taking the grappler feat later. Possibly battle master to invest more in the grappling thing.

Posted Jul 3, 2023Why are they monstrosities? They seem more like an ooze or an aberration. Due to their true form’s amorphous nature, the pseudopods, or their alien-ness.
To me monstrosities seem like animal-like creatures, twisted or enchanted by magic. The most animal like feature of the mimic is it’s teeth, and even that is a long stretch.

Posted Jul 3, 2023Changelings’ masses don’t need to remain the same, and since the very nature of the material mimics are made of changes, it makes sense to me that their mass would too. Volume mostly remains the same though

Posted Jul 3, 2023Why would it not want to be in object form? possibly if someone stuck a bomb to it and it was intelligent enough to think, “Aw, crap!”
A room with a smothering rug, animated armor, and several mimics in various forms. Pure evil.

Posted Jul 15, 2023POV. You see a room with a chest, coat rack, rug, and a table. You think the chest is a mimic. You walk in you feel your feet getting bitten. You have discovered a rug mimic!

Posted Jul 19, 2023"Its statistics are the same in each form." It's only its appearance that changes. Although the stat block does not include details about its weight, assume the weight remains the same. It doesn't become the objects it transforms into. Yes it says "polymorph" but that is not to be confused with the spells Polymorph and True Polymorph, which legitimately transform one thing into another. It doesn't become metal, stone or wood, so you can't harvest materials from it when transformed. It can take on the appearance of armor, and your DM might even allow for a creature to wear it, but it is still a living creature. Personally, I would treat it as half cover, like standing behind another creature, and apply the "Hitting Cover" variant rule.
Can you train or tame one? How? -Those are all DM's discretion.
Can a mimic transform into a whole house, etc. -not a medium sized one. Remember, "Its statistics are the same in each form" -meaning it can only shapechange into something that is medium sized. However, nothing is preventing a DM from making different sized mimics.
Remember also the ADHESIVE trait. Attacking a mimic results in the weapon becoming stuck to it. Retrieving a stuck weapon should require a strength check as an action. If that sounds oppressive, take a look at its statistics. Low AC, low damage, low movement, 1 attack per turn, above average HP. This isn't a creature that overpowers you. This is a creature that waits for you, then tries to outlast you once its caught you. It's a living trap.
All that being said, your table, your rules. Ultimately, fun is what's most important.
