Posted Jul 26, 2021If you are looking for an illusion spell for this situation, you could go with Disguise Self or a magic item that mimic its effects, such as a Hat of Disguise. I think it's a very cool idea and I am curious to know what magic or effect you may homebrew to create such a creature. I would add that a Cleric's Channel divinity: Turn Undead ability, even cast from an ally, could give it away, whether or not the caster knows the nature of your PC, as it targets "each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you".
Lastly, I don't think there is a 5e spell cast "Detect Undead", but maybe you are referring to a Grave's Cleric ability or to a Ranger's Primeval Awareness.

Posted Jul 26, 2021I'm myself planning to play a tieffelin walock who uses the Mask of many faces Eldritch invocation to pass as a half-elf, because of the bad reputation of tieffelins (fantasy racism) and because he would himself hate his infernal legacy.
I would probably need to convince the DM to allow a 10-minute ritual that extends the duration of their at-will Disguise Self from one hour to one night of sleep, but would end when they move or take damage, so that if my character is ever woken up in the middle of the night he would have to either let his friends discover his nature, or spend one action to renew the spell. This, along with the fact that the "half-elf" mutters strange words every hour or so and doesn't ever let anyone touch him, would allow me to hint other players at the truth.
I like very much having secrets to other players, or at least to their PCs. I'm currently playing a walock (the one named Briken, indeed) who claims to be a wizard.

Later on in campaign: Necromancer finds shape stone and wall of stone for building lairs/castles with to hold their piles of spare bones
