Posted Feb 27, 2020If you control a mount, it can only take limited actions, as indicated in the Mounted Combat section of chapter 9 in the PHB. Specifically:
"The initiative of a controlled mount changes to match yours when you mount it. It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options: Dash, Disengage, and Dodge. A controlled mount can move and act even on the turn that you mount it."
Controlling a mount, however, is optional if the mount is intelligent:
"While you’re mounted, you have two options. You can either control the mount or allow it to act independently. Intelligent creatures, such as dragons, act independently."
So for a normal warhorse, absolutely you don't get to have the mount use its Hooves attack action, nor can it use the Trampling Charge ability.
However, a Paladin's steed from the Find Steed spell states:
"Additionally, if your steed has an Intelligence of 5 or less, its Intelligence becomes 6, and it gains the ability to understand one language of your choice that you speak."
So the question your DM needs to answer is whether a creature with an intelligence of 6, and a full telepathic bond to the Paladin (who presumably has an intelligence of 8 *wink*) counts as intelligent. I'd rule absolutely yes. Which means you can treat it as an independent mount. From the Mounted Combat section of chapter 9 of the PHB:
"An independent mount retains its place in the initiative order. Bearing a rider puts no restrictions on the actions the mount can take, and it moves and acts as it wishes. It might flee from combat, rush to attack and devour a badly injured foe, or otherwise act against your wishes."
In this case, if you want to play a mounted character, it's worth the 5 levels of Paladin (or 6 or 10 levels of Bard) it'll take - it's super fun and super worth it! A great literary example of this is found towards the end of the Deed of Paksenarrion - her paladin mount is amazing. Just make sure you practice running essentially two characters in combat (be quick and concise and don't delay the table), and brush up on the ready action and how it works.

Posted May 13, 2020The rules are also worded such that you can allow a “non-intelligent” mount to act independently.
Its a trade off, allowing an extra attack per round, but trusting the judgement of a beast with an Int score of 2.

Posted Aug 10, 2020We say breaks the game... but this is actually how horses are in real life.
The reason heavy cavalry ruled the battlefeild from the late roman empire we'll into the age of gunpowder in the 16th century was that 1000kgs of horse, metal and man traveling at you at 40 miles an hour will knock you on your back and kill you every time.

Posted Nov 15, 2020haha i just had a session where we were fighting this pumpkin headed boss thing and I was riding a warhorse I summoned and was down to 1 hp and knocked to the ground. I used all my movement to get up on the horse healed myself 33 with lay on hands and used the horses movement to knock him to the ground and then stomped him with the horse hooves. It got me out of the way a big AOE and my team got a round of advantage attacks that won us the fight. It was awesome. HORSE FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!

Posted Nov 18, 2020Just saying, the Trampling Charge ability has no size restriction, so IF a Terrasque has used all its legendary resistances, AND the horse rolls at least a Nat 19 to hit, AND the Terrasque rolls a three or less on its save, Godzilla can be toppled by a single horse. If we are going RAW.

Posted Jun 14, 2021I'm a Paladin 7/Fighter 1, I use find steed, and I have the feat Mounted Combatant. Last game, our wizard cast Enlarge on my horse so I was riding a huge Warhorse. I had advantage against everything we fought because They were all smaller than my horse.
