Traits

Stone Lungs. The dragon doesn't need to breathe, except to exhale its Petrification Breath.

False Appearance. While the dragon remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a statue.

Stone Overlord (1/Day). The stone dragon is able to psychically control up to six creatures it can see that have been petrified. When the dragon uses this ability, up to six petrified creatures that it can see begin to move as minions under the dragon's control. Each creature has an AC of 20, 1 hp, is vulnerable to bludgeoning and force damage, and immune to piercing, slashing, necrotic, cold, poison, and psychic damage. Each minion can move up to 15 feet, has a +3 to attack rolls, and on a successful hit deals 1d10 +2 bludgeoning damage.

When one of these minions is reduced to 0 hp, it is smashed to pieces, destroying it.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Petrification Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales a gaseous cloud in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.  Additionally, On a failed save, a target begins to turn to stone and is restrained. The restrained target must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends on the target. On a failure, the target is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Stone Dragon’s Lair

Stone dragons mainly lair in jungles, forests, and mountains, or anywhere they can find a large amount of stone to lair within. Their affinity for matching their lair with their own skin makes them impossible to distinguish from their surroundings.

A legendary stone dragon’s innate magic deepens the foliage in the area around its lair. Vines and moss cover the area, including the dragon itself, making the unwitting visitor unaware of its presence other than a tripping vine, scratching bramble, or an uneasy sense of being watched.

The greatest indication that one has stumbled upon a stone dragon's lair is the strange rain that falls surrounding the area like a wall. The rain dehydrates and desiccates all who enter it.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Vines, brambles, or other foliage fills a 30-foot-radius circle centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The foliage spreads around corners, and its area is considered difficult terrain. Each creature in the foliage when it appears must make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, or become restrained. A restrained creature may repeat the save at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success. The foliage lasts until the dragon uses this lair action again or until the dragon dies.
  • The ground in a 20-foot-radius begins to shift and roll violently centered on a point that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. Creatures within the area of effect must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or land prone. The dragon makes one ranged attack roll (+7 to hit) against on up to three targets within the effected area. On a hit, the target takes 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage.
  • The dragon creates a wall of stone on a solid surface it can see within 120 feet of it. The wall can be up to 30 feet long, 30 feet high, and 6 inches thick. When the wall appears, each creature within its area is pushed 5 feet out of the wall’s space, appearing on whichever side of the wall it wants. Each 10-foot section of the wall has AC 15, 30 hit points, vulnerability to bludgeoning damage, and immunity to acid, cold, necrotic, poison, and psychic damage. The wall disappears when the dragon uses this lair action again or when the dragon dies.
  • The rain surrounding the dragon's lair intensifies and moves into the area. All creatures other than the dragon take (1d4) necrotic damage at the start of their turn. If a creature is reduced to 0 hitpoints in this way, it becomes petrified, but stable.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary stone dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Vegetation overgrowth obscures the land within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair.
  • The ground shakes and quakes at intermittent times, making passage through the land difficult.
  • Stone walls block off areas in the dragon’s lair. Each wall is 3 inches thick, and a 10-foot section has AC 15, 15 hit points, vulnerability to bludgeoning damage, and immunity to acid, cold, necrotic, poison, and psychic damage.
If the dragon wishes to move through a wall, it can do so without slowing down. The portion of the wall the dragon moves through is destroyed, however.
  • Strange rain falls surrounding the area like a wall. If a creature enters the rain they take necrotic damage (1d4) when the rain touches their skin for every 5 feet they move through it as the rain unnaturally dehydrates them. If a creature is reduced to 0 hit points in this way, they become petrified but stable.

If the dragon dies, the quakes and rain stop within 1 day. The vegetation overgrowth returns to normal over the course of 1d10 days.
