Traits

Stormborne Presence. The Stormcrest Dragon can walk on clouds and shape them as solid terrain. It ignores strong winds and difficult terrain caused by storm effects.

Conductive Form. Any creature that hits the dragon with a melee attack within 5 feet takes (2d4) lightning damage.

Cloudshaper’s Will. As an action, the Young Stormcrest Dragon creates a storm ¼ mile in radius, causing heavy rain, winds, and static electricity in the air. It must maintain concentration to keep the storm active. Once Cloudshaper’s Will is in effect, it can use Stormcall.

Actions

Multiattack. The Young Stormcrest Dragon makes two attacks: one Lightning Claw and one Thunderous Bite.

Lightning Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: (+9), reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: (2d8+4) slashing damage plus (2d6) lightning damage. The target must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Thunderous Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: (+9), reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: (2d10+4) piercing damage plus (3d6) thunder damage. On a failed DC 14 Constitution saving throw, the target is deafened for 1 minute.

Stormcall (Recharge 6). If the dragon has activated Cloudshaper’s Will, it may call down a single lightning strike on one creature within the storm’s area. The target must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking (5d8) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Reactions

Catch the Rider. If a creature falls from the dragon, the Young Stormcrest Dragon may use its reaction to attempt to catch them. The dragon makes a DC 14 Dexterity save. On a success, the dragon swoops beneath them, preventing the fall and setting them safely on its back.

Protect an Ally. If the dragon is within 5 ft of an ally, it can choose to block any incoming attack as a reaction. The dragon must do this before the 'to hit' roll and cannot avoid any attack it choses to block. The dragon will always take full damage.

Description

Young Stormcrest Dragon – Monster Characteristics Description

Name: Young Stormcrest Dragon
Classification: Celestial Dragon
Habitat: High Altitudes, Stormy Skies, Floating Cloud Formations
Behavior: Proud, Fast-Learning, Reckless
Threat Level: High

Physical Description

No longer the fragile hatchling it once was, the Young Stormcrest Dragon has grown into a powerful and sleek aerial predator, built for speed and precision. Though still smaller than its fully mature counterparts, it now possesses the strength to carry a rider, its long body built for agility and high-speed flight.

  • Size & Build: It has developed longer, leaner limbs and expansive wings, increasing both its speed and its ability to maneuver through storms. Though not yet at full power, its aura of crackling static electricity hints at the storm-bringer it is destined to become.
  • Scales & Patterns: Its once-soft scales have hardened, now resembling shifting storm clouds in motion, ranging from pale whites to deep grays. The lightning-bolt-shaped bioluminescent markings along its body pulse irregularly, indicating its still-growing control over its electrical energy.
  • Eyes & Expression: Its electric blue or silver eyes glow faintly, their light flaring intensely when charged with energy. The dragon’s gaze now holds a newfound confidence—a far cry from the cautious curiosity of its youth.
  • Fur & Conductivity: The soft, cloud-like fur along its back remains, but now bristles with static energy, standing on end when the dragon is agitated or preparing to attack. Its claws and fangs have hardened to a metallic sheen, capable of conducting powerful bursts of lightning.

Magical Affinity & Abilities

The Young Stormcrest Dragon’s control over storms is still in development, but its abilities are becoming formidable:

  1. Cloudshaper’s Will – No longer just an observer of storms, the Young Stormcrest Dragon can now summon its own, though it must concentrate to maintain the effect. This marks its first step into true storm manipulation.
  2. Conductive Form – Its growing connection to lightning now manifests passively, arcing electricity into anything that dares to touch it.
  3. Stormcall (Limited Use) – Unlike older Stormcrest Dragons who can summon lightning freely, this young dragon must first create its storm before calling down its wrath. The effort is exhausting, but each strike grows stronger as the dragon masters its abilities.
  4. Skyborn Mount – Now large and strong enough to carry a rider, the Young Stormcrest Dragon begins to learn the synchronization needed for flight-based combat. Though still inexperienced, it instinctively attempts to catch its rider if they fall.

Temperament & Behavior

  • Proud but Reckless: The Young Stormcrest Dragon has shed the timid nature of its youth, eager to test its power against stronger foes. It is highly competitive and often overestimates its abilities, leading to reckless confrontations.
  • Eager to Prove Itself: It has not yet earned the wisdom of an elder Stormcrest, making it more prone to impulsive decisions. It desires respect from older dragons and will push itself to exhaustion to prove its worth.
  • Protective of Those It Bonds With: Though still learning the nuances of dragon rider partnerships, a Young Stormcrest Dragon develops a strong bond with its chosen rider, seeing them as a fellow warrior rather than just a passenger.

Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities

  1. Limited Storm Control – Unlike an adult Stormcrest Dragon, it cannot summon a storm at will and must focus entirely on maintaining its Cloudshaper’s Will before calling lightning.
  2. Energy Drain – If it overuses its lightning, its bioluminescent markings dim, and it enters a state of fatigue, losing access to its electrical abilities until it recharges from an external storm source.
  3. Overconfidence – Though powerful, it is still learning its limits, making it more predictable and easier to provoke compared to older dragons.
