To celebrate the launch of Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club, we invited players to create their own magic items using the D&D Beyond Homebrew tool. You delivered.
From riff-ready gear to the collar of a very good dog, these winners stood out for creativity, clear effects, and on-theme 80s energy.
Here are your five winners of the What’s in the Bag of Holding? Homebrew Item Contest, each of whom will receive a Stranger Things x RSVLTS Class of '86 Reversible Bomber Jacket and a copy of the Welcome to the Hellfire Club Ultimate Bundle:
- aston452 — Sweatbands of Strumming
- Lanaken — Shirt of the Defiant
- Richard40567 — Devil Horn Rings
- kevtori — Flip-Up Shades
- Iggisnilmor — Collar of the Goodest Boy
Thank you to everyone who submitted an item, shared an idea, or helped bring a little more chaos to the bag.

Posted Nov 20, 2025Hey there, I couldn't fully describe the item's features with the 50 word description and modifiers, but it effectively lets you activate the ring to grant allies within 30 feet 2d6 temporary hit points and any enemies within that range must also make a DC15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
I'll be making a fully descriptive version soon so keep an eye out! 🤘

Posted Nov 21, 2025Congrats to the winners!
I must say though, I am confused by the judging here. One of the items is flavour text only with no actual functionality, another is mechanics only and basically no description and another has used the "Notes" section to actually complete the item description which would have otherwise gone well about the 50 word limit.

Posted Nov 21, 2025I can't speak on behalf of the other winning entries but in terms of my 'flavour text only' item (which technically did have functionality in the modifiers but those don't appear on character sheets), I went off the judging criteria in the original contest call-out:
"This contest celebrates creativity and tone over rules or complexity. No need to build full mechanics, stats, or modifiers. No need for it to be functional within the D&D Beyond character sheet. Think strange. Think simple."
I've since built a fully-functional version of the item for both 2014 & 2024 rules, linked in my replies further above. ☺️

Posted Nov 21, 2025Fully appreciate that you have made a functioning item now and your "flavour only" version is great. My confusion is that, if your "flavour only" item is of a winning standard, then how is a function only item also of that standard. It just seems strange to me and makes me second guess what I might submit for a similar comp in the future.
To be clear, please don't take this as a personally criticism or attack. I'm simply confused by the judgements and the criteria used to get there.

Posted Nov 23, 2025I was wondering kind of the same thing. Also, how can someone get negative votes? I had a +3 and then a -3 giving me a net of 0...
Wasn't aware you could "downvote" someone's creativity.

Posted Nov 23, 2025If people think the staff took more than just a cursory glance at the submissions or cared to follow their own guidelines and judging criteria... I've got bad news for you. There were plenty of submissions that followed the rules, were on theme with the Hellfire Club, and had cool mechanics along with solid descriptions that fit under 50 words. One of the winning items doesn't have an actual effect at all. Another has an effect that's only described in the notes, breaking or "bypassing" the 50 word count rule that other submissions had to follow, not to mention not even having anything to do with the theme of the Hellfire Club. No offense to the winning submissions, but it really just seems like they had some intern choose 5 random items without much care for the rules and judging criteria.

Posted Nov 26, 2025It seemed like it. I don't know why I worried about word count or any of the other rules. It's fine though. Just want to know how I got "negative" votes. That straight up sucks.
