So as of late me and my party of level 10 Monk, Wizard, and me (War)Cleric were clearing out a old mine infested with a minor demon portal in the halls and later another minor Shadow fell sealed for about a week or so (Unsure). We pushed further down into the mines and the path began to rise up and lead to a large metal door of some unknown make that was scratched and dented. I was given a key for said door and was told it lead to a ruined temple to Tempus (My god) and opened it. We sent the monk as a forward scout to see what was ahead and he came back screaming and telling us to run and we did so sealing the door behind us to hear loud smashing and roars behind the door. Upon looking over our once fully healed monk now near death (20 or so hp) with a medical check he began to tell us a massive demon was locked into the temple as sealed down there. One arcane check from our wizard from hearing its appears took a guess and thought it might be a Balor of sorts due to the massive burn marks and hearing it can teleport, spooked we backed out of the mines and returned home a nearby town to rest.
My question is how does a group of three normally take on a powerful demon sealed below? I was thinking setting lots of glyphs of warding and baiting him into it or try to get our small ally of Essembra to begin planning.
Leave it there and come back later (a few levels later, like 5-6 levels) with a paladin who crits a lot. 3 level 10’s will get their asses kicked by a balor (assuming it’s the book standard balor).
Although, actually, you could potentially one shot it with banishment.
I’d go with casting protection from evil and good on yourself just before you go in, to give you time to get the spell off. Once you start casting banishment, protection will turn off, but having it on will make it so you should at least get the chance. If it fails it’s save, it’s back to the abyss for balor, then you just have to hold concentration for a minute, and it stays there. Of course, it has a very high cha save, and advantage against spells, so you’ll need to be very, very lucky. Really, leaving it there for now might be the best choice.
Magic Circle would be good if you can get it down on the outside of the door.
I do see the use but what if he tries to teleport past us and reach the overworld? The main threat with this problem is if he runs we have little to no means to catch him. On the same now I was thinking to wait for one level then pick up Forbiddance but I see a flaw there to with the long casting time.

Yeah that could work but what if it runs? The overworld and Essembra doesn't have much of a standing force still being rebuild and there are a on going threat of a war brewing.

That’s why I said to leave it. Heck, re enforce the doors so some other poor fools don’t open it up. Come back when you’re ready for it.
DON'T DEMON OPEN INSIDE
I think you mean DON'T OPEN. DEMON INSIDE.
Good think Balors don't know minor illusion.... DON'T OPEN. TREASURE INSIDE.
Good think?
Why did you change my post?

Please take a look at my homebrewed Spells, Magic Items, and Subclasses. Any feedback appreciated.

I’d probably swap the middle two words, but yeah. Something like that for a start.

I have a weird sense of humor.
