I was thinking about something for a fighter that went along the lines of dodge.
Call it "Brace", for the purpose of this post, I know theres a maneuver already called that but I couldn't brain something else.
Say something along the lines of "as a bonus action, until the start of the fighters next turn, all weapon attacks against the fighter have disadvantage, the fighter has advantage on strength saves, and advantage on athletic checks to avoid being shoved(edited)."
So spell attacks would still be normal and no adv on dex saves.
This could be a fighting style maybe or just a feature the fighter gets at a specific level like the rogues cunning action, maybe a feat with something else in there like +1 Strength or Constitution.
That seems incredibly powerful. For some subclasses, and builds (pretty much everyone without PAM), they would do it every single turn, or do their one bonus action thing on the first turn and do it every other turn. There’s no downside.
If something is so good you feel like you have to do it, its a good sign it’s OP.
Though I would love to see fighters getting more maneuvers as kind of standard options, and I like the idea of it, this one seems too strong.
Even as a full action that would be too strong. If it was a full Action to gain advantage on Str, Dex & Con saving throws and all Athletics checks until the start of your next turn that would be about balanced with Dodge I think. For just a bonus action it should be just the Athletics advantage.
The idea for me was the fact that fighters don't seem to have a lot to do with their bonus action (mine only has and will only have second wind and shield master shove :P) so I was trying to give them more to do while trying to make them more formidable in melee combat. I also realized just now that rogues CAN'T dodge as a BA like I thought so that invalidated one point of my argument lol.
There could be restrictions on it, against a single enemy? Against something up to a certain size category? Could require heavy armour and/or shield?
Originally I had thought just disadvantage on attacks, but I thought about it and if you're bracing for an attack it would make sense that you would be harder to move, at least to my video game brain lol.
If it does the exact same thing as Dodge, but as a Bonus Action instead of an Action then it’s OP. You wanna dodge, spend an Action. If it was similar (advantage on saves instead of disadvantage to opponents on attacks) for the same Action, then it’s balanced. I could even see “Bracing” for mental saves too. If it’s only gonna be a Bonus Action, it has to be less useful than Dodging.

Thoughts?

I'm unfamiliar with PAM, what's that stand for?

PAM stands for the Polearm Master Feat.

Ya that's fair, thanks for the input!
Sounds like you're thinking of Barbarian Rage.
Ya that's fairly close, disadvantage on attacks as opposed to resistance to some damage types though. Gives me some things to think about.
