Fun idea for a sorcerer: build a draconic sorcerer around booming blade/green flame blade, shadow blade, and meta-magic. Flavor all your spells as sword techniques.
there could also be a lot of fun to be had mixing this warlock.
Shadow Blade is a spell that I really want to love, but due to it being concentration and Self-only, it can be hard to pull off a good build. Plenty of flavor, but a lot of paths that just fall short.
You could do a Sorcerer(X)/Cleric(6) multiclass. The Twilight Domain (UA) gets a lot of interesting flavor due to synergy with 'Channel Divinity: Twilight Sanctuary' and 'Steps of the Brave'. (Dim light gives every attack advantage and grants a Fly speed.)
Grave Cleric 2: Gets you medium armor and shield proficiency and Path to the Grave channel divinity.
Whispers Bard 15: Gets you Psychic Blades and fun spells to play with via Magical Secrets.
Combat goes something like this: Round 1 - Cast Shadow Blade, Attack with Booming/Green Flame Blade
Round 2: Activate Path to the Grave and melt your target with a Quickened Booming/Green Flame Blade.
Subsequent Rounds alternate casting Booming/Green Flame Blade then using your bonus action to replenish your sorcery points. If you have sorcery points then cast 2 Booming/Green Flame Blades. Sadly Psychic Blades only trigger once per round so your 2nd attack won't hit as hard.
The Cons of this build is that you only get 3 ASIs to play with so you can only max Dex or Char, unless you rolled stats and rolled really well.
Starting stats, 17,14,12,8,8,15 (first ASI +1 to Str and Cha)
Background: Outlander
Weapon: Warhammer
Armour: Half Plate
Always take Booming Blade as his first cantrip. Try to play to the lightning/thunder/ice theme, so not much in the way of fire spells. Unfortunately Storm Sorcerer's level 6 ability is rather roleplay only but the level 14 ability is quite nice. I'd try to pick up the Thaumaturgy spell at some point with Magic Initiate: Cleric so he can make his voice boom across the battlefield.
The grey robed dwarf planted his feet on the ship's shifting deck, his long red beard rimed with ice. He raised his warhammer, lightning crackling around its head, as his voice thundered. "I'm not happy, lad, and when Fergus Stormcloud isnae happy, nobody is happy." He struck the hammer against the ground, and lightning arced from the heavens, the winds sweeping him up. Bodies were thrown around, and the air filled with the acrid scent of ozone, as blue-white fire tore apart the pirates. "And ye will know my name, when I lay my vengeance upon ye."
1 level of Hexblade helps this so much as now your primary attack stat with the sword is chr. It would give you both booming blade/green flame blade and shield and or hex. For one level dip you also get proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons.
Mind you I think Hexblade work well for any Gish that uses chr as the spell casting/
The Mountain Dwarf Sorcerer is the best melee sorcerer (medium armor and Axes/Hammers to start, Strength and Con Bonus's...but here is another:
half Elf (high elf for Elf weapon prficiencies): Draconic is easiest to pull off here, but Shadow could work as well....I'm trying it with a Storm sorcerer though currently low AC and only two spells at level 1 requires patience for this to kick in around 3-4th level. The Storm sorcerer abilities want you close in, so I've taken Mage Armor and Chaos Bolt as starting 1st level spells. Gust, minor illusion, Shocking Grasp, ray of frost as starting cantrips...Will grab booming blade later as I don't want to get into melee just yet.....My concept is an ***** type of character who believes he is decended from Djinn, and thus his Djinn nature is exerting itself and coming out, he truly believes he is changing into a Djinn. I intend to go with Illusion, Lightning/Thunder/air/Cold spells. I might add 2 levels of Genie Warlock just for the 1st level ability (Genies vessel and Genies Wrath) at level2 take the invocations: Armor of shadows (saves me a spell slot in Sorcerer) and either "Mask of many faces" or "misty visions" leaning toward misty visions to be on theme.
as deathmvp said, Hexblade warlock since it gives you prof in armor if you want to wear it and you can pretty much wield any weapon you want once you get to level 3 and get pact of the blade.

yeah but it doesn't always fit story wise.....if you are just Min/Maxing sure that is fine.

I was actually thinking more theme wise, like your draconic ancestor was a powerful soul that it allowed it to inhabit other objects like armor and weapons and your humanoid ansecstors managed to tame that tower and shaped in into a memory passed down through the lineage of this said character and now your character is drawing those memories to wield those weapons as if they were trained in them. Think like Aang from Avatar The last air bender and how he enters the Avatar state allowing him to control all elements despite being not fully trained in them in the early episodes of the show.

My issue with hexblade is that you can get a better ac as a dex focused sorcerer, and multiclassing really makes the pool of sorcery points feel especially tiny, even with warlock spell slots to help restore some.
If you were going melee draconic sorcerer I'd go Githyanki for the following: 1) they get armour proficies, 2) they get weapon proficiencies, 3) lore wse they have a racial affinity for Red Dragons.
If you want a multiclass then you have lore/story options for Death or Grave Domain cleric and Undying or Undead (UA) Warlock because Vlaakith the lich queen is ruler of the Githyanki.
With the new Adventurer's League rules you can switch your racial bonuses to boost your charisma too, so the Githyanki's +1 to intelligence can be +1 to charisma.
I believe the new rules allow you to change your racial weapons too, so you could trade in your mountain dwarf's warhammer for a rapier if you want to be a dex rogue

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Divine Soul Sorcerer could also work quite well. You get Aid to cover your lack of HP and Spirit Guardians to give a big damage boost in melee range.
If you do a Brass or Gold Draconic Sorcerer, the way I read it, you could add your Charisma modifier to the damage roll every time that you cast Green Flame Blade, on top of adding your strength or dexterity modifier to the damage roll (once you reach 6th level, of course).
With the changes, RAW, Shadowblade and BB/GFB are no longer compatible.

Mountain dwarf, boosting CHA and DEX or WIS (see below). this gives more bonus stat points than anything but Half Elf AND the ability to use heavy armor while still dumping strength
Two levels of cleric or fighter to taste (for heavy armor, shield, and action surge/fighting style or two levels of cleric spells). You will end up with good con saves or wisdom saves. And decent dex saves. Tempest cleric can be fun because you can get max damage with the right blasting spells.
Divine soul rest of the way
Key spells: spirit guardians, spiritual weapon, at least one good AOE cantrip
Feats: Heavy Armor Mastery for tanking, meta magic adept, elemental adept, toughness
This is NOT a weapons attack build - hex blade or sorcadin will always win that contest. This is about walking into the bad guys and tanking them while spirit guardians and other AOE spells do the work.
Tasha's Cauldron added Fire Shield to the Sorcerer spell list. That's a useful spell if you're going to be in melee range as a Sorcerer. The big thing being that it doesn't require concentration.

Do it, I say go Sorcerer for 3 for Shadow Blade then go Rogue for 3 for Swashbuckler. Then go Sorcerer 7 for Greater Invisibility, or more rogue!
An idea I've had for the ultimate Shadow Blade user:
Sorcerer 3: Gets you Shadow Blade, Booming/Green Flame Blade. Quicken Spell Metamagic.
Grave Cleric 2: Gets you medium armor and shield proficiency and Path to the Grave channel divinity.
Whispers Bard 15: Gets you Psychic Blades and fun spells to play with via Magical Secrets.
