I know for DDB, the max level for characters is 20 but I really wish that it could go to 40 so that if you want a level 20 Scout Rogue multiclassed with a level 20 Gloom Stalker Ranger you can have it and all the goodies that come with both being at their max lvl.
If Wizards of the Coast ever releases official rules to support high-than-level-20 progression, D&D Beyond will, endeavour to support that. However, D&D Beyond is a toolset for the official rules of D&D fifth edition, and said rules do not currently go beyond level 20
From my understanding, anything above level 20 is "Homebrew" and would have to be done on paper or another site that allows it. Which is fine, I just haven't played anything but virtual in a long while so to me that's kind of pointless if it stays *at* lvl 20 for it's max. Don't get me wrong, it's great when your not going higher than that. It's just wishful thinking on my part. 🤷🏼♀️
While 20 is the max, under the rules in the dmg (Chapter 7) you can continue to track XP and grant Epic Boons and/or ASI/Feats instead of a level up.
I've actually given this some thought. Just make the different class features feats. Like the feat Rogue Level 2 would just be Cunning Action. Just have the text "Prerequisite: Character level 20 and Rogue level 1"
Got curious about this and made a feat for Rogue level 1
That was fun.
So the question is where does this go? Is Rogue 2 just Cunning Action and now you have 2 feats, or do you consolidate 1 and 2 into the Rogue 2 feat with the instructions they need to delete the Rogue 1 feat? That second option could be useful to build in the level scaling that things like Expertise or Sneak Attack will bring higher level rogues.

Will that ever change to allow for higher levels?
