I'm trying to create a simple "weapon" for a character with claws; the idea is to create something functionally similar to a Dagger but with the Slashing damage type, and trading the ability to throw it for it being weightless and impossible to remove (except by DM intervention, e.g- forcibly trimmed).
The closest I seem to be able to do is to add either a Dagger or Sickle as these have the right damage (d4) and I can customise to remove weight and value and add a "Cannot be removed" note.
My problem is that neither is quite close enough; the Sickle has a bunch of issues with the stats it calculates (since it lacks the Finesse attribute it's no use for a dextrous character) while the Dagger at least functions correctly, but has a bunch of extra data for throwing that I'd like to hide (plus the damage is Piercing but that's not really a big deal). So the choice seems to be between Dagger with a bunch of extra attributes and wrong damage type, or Sickle and having to manually re-add bonuses to hit/damage for dextrous characters.
I know I can create magic weapons via the Homebrew tools (which are much improved since last time I looked at them btw!) but am I right in thinking that there is still no way to create or fully edit basic weapons? If I've just missed where to do this then I'd love to know!

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
It looks like Homebrew Feats have the same basic options for its Actions (or were you suggesting some other means of adding it?) as for Magic Weapons, but it definitely does seem like a better place to put it rather than as equipment, thanks.
The problem I'm still having though is that there appears to be no way to produce an attack action emulating the Finesse property, or am I missing something? I can only seem to select a single character attribute, so if I choose DEX then a character with higher STR won't receive the correct bonus automatically. What I really need to be able to do is allow the action to use whichever is better between DEX and STR, is this possible?
Only way I can see to do it so far would be to create two versions of the Feat, one for STR and one for DEX, but this won't be able to cope with the character suffering any kind of penalties. Is there some other way I could do this?

You could try a homebrew race - races have the full action system built into them, giving a lot greater control over adding actions to the character sheet.
Well the problem I'm having really isn't how to add the actions, I think a Feat will be more convenient than a whole new race, but rather how to emulate the Finesse effect, where an attack uses the better value between STR and DEX for calculating its bonus.
I could for example create separate DEX and STR variants for my "Vicious Claws" Feat, but really I'd rather just have one feat that somehow uses the correct value. Consider for example if a player normally has better DEX than STR, they would select Vicious Claws (DEX) as their Feat, but if they were to suffer a DEX penalty, STR would not automatically be used instead, as is the case for an actual Dagger when added as equipment.
I guess it's just a current limitation of the Homebrew system then?

I know that its probably a hot topic in the dev team's queue, but do we know if homebrewing mundane weapons will be coming soon? I'd love to add my Kpinga (Handaxe variant) to my character's sheet!

I am in the same boat! I’ve got a character who made a weapon out of a large bell and without this feature it’s nearly impossible to make the item.

I don't expect it this year, and I wouldn't even put money on it for 2021, although I'd be delighted to be wrong. The homebrew revamp is on the "long term" part of the roadmap. Based on DDB's history*, I'd be very surprised if everything on the short-term road map were completed by the end of this year. Adam (VP and primary public face/voice for DDB) has said they are hoping to target inventory management (on the long term list) for this year, but that is only a hope.
*This is not a complaint, just an observation: development has always been much slower that those of us who are customers/consumers would like. There are probably excellent reasons for that, and it certainly doesn't help development speed that WOTC keeps throwing them curve balls they have to figure out how to accommodate.

Honestly, that’s the main reason for all of the system upgrades they’re doing. That way in future it’ll be easier to field all of those curveballs. I imagine things will start to pick up pace once they finish separating the content from the creation system. And once the creation system is upgraded, I imagine things will start happening so fast it’ll make these days seem metaphorically Neolithic by comparison.
Is there a mathematical formula you use to determine damage from a weapon? For instance, taking in length of blade, weight, wield type (single, 2 handed, or versatile)?
For instance, back when I played Cyberpunk, I found the formula for firearm damage. It was muzzle velocity divided by X and the leftover was +damage.

Hi there,
you're correct - D&D Beyond doesn't currently support the homebrew of mundane items (weapons/armor etc).
If you're after a natural attack for your character, you could do one of the following:

Yup, the systems are based on how Wizards of the Coast create content - all natural weapons specify which ability bonus they use (almost always STR).
I expect much more flexibility when the homebrew revamp happens.
