I want a character to wear light chain mail under his jerkin, to fend off that occasional dagger in the dark. the only chain option appears to be 50+ lbs. or nothing. Do I choose leather armor arom and tell the GM what I'm doing? And what about elven mail?
Where the hell are spells kept?
How do I add an avatar? I know it's just cosmetic, but I like to see his mug up there in the corner.
You can find the list of armor at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields you are likely looking for chain shirt. Any other options would be up to the DM. Spells are found under the spells tab on the character sheet, make sure to choose manage spells there. Or in the builder there's the spells dropdown on the class tab. You can click on the cog on your character sheet by the name and get a menu which includes change portrait or click on the portrait in the editor on the Home tab to change the portrait.

Chain mail is heavy armor that covers the entire body, not just the upper body. I think you're looking for a chain shirt.
Chain Shirt. Made of interlocking metal rings, a chain shirt is worn between layers of clothing or leather. This armor offers modest protection to the wearer's upper body and allows the sound of the rings rubbing against one another to be muffled by outer layers.
Of all the armor categories, heavy armor offers the best protection. These suits of armor cover the entire body and are designed to stop a wide range of attacks.
Chain Mail. Made of interlocking metal rings, chain mail includes a layer of quilted fabric worn underneath the mail to prevent chafing and to cushion the impact of blows. The suit includes gauntlets.
Mithral armor is also an option. Mithral is a light, flexible metal. A mithral chain shirt or breastplate can be worn under normal clothes.
