We can't change the die type or number for a weapon, unfortunately. What I ended up doing for my Shadow Blade was base it off a Longsword (to get the d8 die), then add the following modifiers:
Replace Damage Type: Psychic
Damage: Psychic, 1d8 [this shows up in the Notes as +1d8 {psychic symbol}]
Ignore Weapon Property: Versatile
Weapon Property: Finesse
Weapon Property: Light
Weapon Property: Thrown (20/60) [this doesn't display properly on the sheet, but it's there for reference]

If you start with a Greatsword, "Ignore” Heavy & Two-Handed, and add Versatile it will still display the 2d6, but it will also add the “Versatile 2d8” as well.
Obviously you would still have to add Finesse & Light, [and Thrown for all the good it does] and change the damage to Psychic as well. But that’s about as close as I can get you. (Although it would be easier to fake it with an action attached to a feat than as a magic weapon.)
Hmm! Good idea about making a 2d6 weapon be versatile to get a 2d8 for rolling. I homebrewed my Shadow Blade before the Dice Roller was a thing, so the +1d8 in the Notes felt like same difference at the time.

I did the same back then too for other similar projects.

Shadowfang Hilt
Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement)
This ornate rapier hilt is designed to house a special teardrop-shaped Essence Gem. Without an Essence Gem, the hilt is inert. When a Shadow Essence Gem is slotted into the hilt, a blade of dark, shadowy energy springs forth, whispering softly like a cold breeze through a graveyard.
Properties:
• Damage: When wielded with a Shadow Essence Gem, this weapon functions as a rapier dealing 1d8 piercing damage, plus an additional 1d8 necrotic damage. This necrotic damage leaves no physical wounds or marks on the body.
• Silent Death: A creature slain by this weapon leaves behind an unmarked, lifeless corpse, devoid of any signs of how they perished.
• Life Drain Recharge: If a creature is killed by this weapon, the wielder may speak a command phrase in the Shadow Tongue within 1 minute of the creature’s death. This command draws the life force of the slain creature into the gem, fully recharging its magical energy.
Note: The weapon requires a Shadow Essence Gem to function and does not work with Essence Gems of other
I'd recommend making a homebrew copy of something like a Flame Tongue Rapier. Then you can peek inside to see how that was set up, and either use it as a reference or adjust it as needed.
Fair warning, though: the dice system won't currently roll more than one damage type.
Hi,
Is it possible to create a shortsword with 2d8 damage?
I'd like to create an item to represent the shadow blade spell effect and I have some difficulties to set the 2d8 as damage dice.
All the base weapon in the homebrew item creation page do not make me change that or at least I don't know how to do that.
Any help?
Thanks.
I've dealt with this exact same issue :)

How do you ignore heavy and two handed, and add versatile
Using Modifiers. "Ignore Weapon Property" and "Weapon Property", respectively.
